Last Night: Electroma Release Party at Studio A

Mon Jul 30, 2007 at 10:01:50 AM

electroma.jpg

Better Than: Paying $50 for popcorn and milk duds only to sit through an hour and 45 minutes of Lindsay Lohan’s greatest adventures.

The Review:

Electroma, the new film written by the Daft Punk wonder couple, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo, was first seen by the eyes of a tightly packed Studio A on Friday July 27, thanks to Sweat Records, Vice Records and of course, the New Times. The ever so convenient Miami rain delayed the showing of the 9pm movie by almost an hour but no one seemed to mind as the screen displayed clips of various Daft Punk videos, while two Deuce Crew members spun vibrant electro tracks, including tracks by the featured artists of the night. The footage and the music, actually exemplified the mood that the movie ultimately set by preparing the audience for Daft Punks visual artistry. For example, the creepy animatronic figure in “Technologic” and the skin pealing girl in “Prime Time of Your Life,” showed the fantastical relationship between human and machine and the want to be something deeper, which in turn became the plot for Electroma.

Concert Review--Faith Hill and Tim McGraw

Sun Jul 29, 2007 at 08:59:37 PM

Faith Hill & Tim McGraw at the BankAtlantic Center
Tuesday, July 23, 2007

Better Than: Watching these two duke it out in a Celebrity Death Match.

The Review: Move over Korn, Evanescence, and Flyleaf, the real Family Values tour made its long awaited debut at Sunrise’s Bank Atlantic Center last Tuesday night to an anxious mob of thirty-somethings and lovebirds. America’s favorite super couple, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill gave the fans just what they were looking for: rock, soul, and hope for their own relationships—all with a dash of manners, appreciation for family, and even a little praise of God. Combining old favorites with a surprising mix of covers and new songs, they kept the energetic crowd rocking for over three hours.

The show kicked-off with a duet: a cover of Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars. Faith was first to grace the stage donning a white, sequined halter jumpsuit and a new set of bombshell highlights, looking more like Malibu Barbie than country’s reining queen, while Tim made the honkey-tonks proud in his trademark black cowboy hat and leather pants that left little to the imagination. The couple promised returning fans of last year’s sold-out performances a new bag of tricks, but the set and sequence of the event appeared to follow much of the same format, giving it a somewhat formulaic feel. Nitpicking aside, Faith pleased longtime fans with her pitch perfect vocals, reviving hits like “Wild One” and ‘This Kiss’ by giving them a bluesy, gospel tone reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, and by breathing new life into old classics like Joplin’s ‘Piece of my Heart’ and Abba’s “Winner Takes it All’. Faith even let the crowd in on a secret: “My very first greatest hits album will be released this year and all the song’s I’m playing for you tonight will be on it.” She then launched into a new song, “Lost” which promises to land the superstar yet another Billboard hit.

After an ingenious set change, (an 8 minute video spoof on the couple’s 10 year relationship), McGraw barreled on stage performing Steve Miller’s “Joker” followed by “Real Good Man” (complete with hip gyrations) and jam sessions so lengthy that at times fans might have felt like they’d been transported back in time to a Grateful Dead concert. Playing several songs off of his latest effort, Let it Go, did seem to throw off a few fans unfamiliar with the new album, but they were back on their feet and chanting again when “Indian Outlaw” and the anthem, “Live Like you Were Dying” brought down the house with deafening, fanatic approval.
Ultimately, while Tim and Faith shine on-stage as individuals, it's during their duets that they radiate with a chemistry and magnetism that is palpable. In these moments one can actually spy high school sweethearts dancing cheek to cheek in the aisles while a middle aged man gives his wife’s hand a squeeze. Tim and Faith do that for us. Their music gives us hope; their lives give us hope, and we depart feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. And any fool can see the true family value in that. --Janeen Kelley

Concert Preview - Lefty Perez at Club Mystiques

Fri Jul 27, 2007 at 06:00:59 AM

It’s a little past midnight inside the ballroom of a Sunny Isles Beach hotel, as the thinned out crowd seems oblivious to the salsa blaring from the speakers.

Nothing the resident DJ standing atop the stage puts on the turntable during a one-hour span did little to arouse the gathering of mostly middle-aged women and gents. Fifteen minutes later everything changed – thanks to the boyish energy, stage presence and melodic voice of Lefty Perez.

Despite struggling to adjust the microphone sthe Puerto Rican salsero uses his high-ranging vocals to deliver a blistering rendition of “Perdoname De Nuevo” while imploring the crowd to come to its feet. Several minutes later about half of the people in the ballroom are out of their chairs and dancing around Perez – who is sitting in a chair - on the wooden floor.

He displays a rare combination of gentleman’s class and composure as he heads out into the crowd in an attempt to pull more people onto the dance floor. But that’s one of Perez’s best qualities according to a longtime associate.

“That’s Lefty man, whether he’s singing in front of 10,000 people or in a situation like that one,” says Gamalier Reyes, 27, who has served as Perez’s orchestra director since 1994. “Lefty makes something positive out of anything and just transmits that kind of vibe to those around him.”

Last Night: Manson and Slayer at Sound Advice

Better Than: A sacrifice

Marilyn Manson and Slayer kicked off their “Reign in the Sun” tour at the South Florida Fairgrounds last night.

Junior High age Goths in their black Marilyn Manson outfits sweat profusely as they wandered around in the heat. A group of boys with white face paint and colored contacts stood in line at the Starbucks on the premises. Hot Topic is sponsoring the tour, which somehow created an outdoor mall-like atmosphere. Band merchandise included belt buckles, flasks, posters, pins, and the $35 concert T-shirts.

Last Night: The Format at Culture Room

Wed Jul 25, 2007 at 10:43:27 AM

The Format
July 24, 2007
Culture Room
Better Than:
Watching a clip of The Format on My Super Sweet Sixteen.

After arriving at the show moments before the door opened, I surveyed my surroundings to see if it met my expectations. Pimped out tour bus, a symbol of budding rock stars: check. A line of eager teenagers sprawled around the corner: check. It was blatantly obvious headliners The Format had finally made it.

The show opened with an act unknown to me prior to the show, Ollie Jason. Having been too preoccupied with checking out the band merch, I arrived late in front of the stage expecting to hear an unfamiliar band when, instead, I was met with um … something else. To my surprise, there stood a teenager in a batman mask, white shirt, yellow basket ball shorts, and matching cape. To say I was confused would be putting it mildly. A few seconds passed before I realized I had stumbled upon a magic show at a concert.

Following Batman's performance, a member of Limbeck laid his head comfortably between the blade of a guillotine and a block of wood. Would Limbeck become one member short? Some of my fear subsided as I saw movement after the blade was dropped. Too bad I had to watch the rest of the magic show. Ladies and Gentlemen, the utterly un-amazing, Ollie Jason!

Concert Review: Willy Chirino at Dolphin Stadium

Mon Jul 23, 2007 at 08:29:01 PM

Willy Chirino
July 21, 2007
Dolphin Stadum

A downpour and several rounds of lightning three hours before the first pitch did nothing to deter a large contingent of Willy Chirino’s most loyal fans from heading out to Dolphin Stadium.

Whether they are Cuban exiles that arrived in Miami 40 years ago or yesterday, most of them have adopted Chirino as a uniting voice for his socially conscious songs. He says what most of them want to hear.

The singer didn’t disappoint Saturday night as he rewarded a predominately Cuban audience that gathered around the infield – after the Marlins victory over the Reds –with a heartfelt, energetic performance (and a handful of his emotionally charged anthems).

Appearing vibrant and relaxed, Chirino smoothly made his way through a medley of songs, including "Soy," "Medias Negras" and "Castigala," with the assistance of a blistering orchestra directed by Juan Carlos Valladares.

Several minutes later he showed off his versatility by doing solos on bass, timbal and the keyboard.

Halfway through the show Chirino granted the wishes of a woman in the front row pleading with him to sing "Porque Tu Eres Mejor" (Because You’re Better). Chirino sang several verses of the song over a light piano as the woman frantically screamed into a cell phone. But obviously she wasn’t the only one who walked away feeling a sense of pride on this night.

He capped it off with a captivating rendition of “Nuestro Dia Ya Viene Llegando" (Our day is Arriving) that drew plenty of loud cheers and even a few tears. Leave it to Chirino to sing what everybody wants to hear. -- Fernando Ruano Jr.

Last Night: Beyonce at the BankAtlantic Center

Beyonce
July 22, 2007
BankAtlantic Center

Better Than: Hating. You gotta love it.

The Review:
Blue-eyed soulster Robin Thicke was just finishing up his set when I walked into the BankAtlantic Center. So like any good girl on a Sunday night, I head straight to the bar for a little Jesus Juice. Unfortunately, that umpteenth toll en route to the BankAtlantic Center had left my wallet cashless so I settled for a bottled water and hopped on the escalator to my seat high in the rafters. A little irked by my sobriety and even more annoyed by the loong ride out to Sunrise, I sat back and waited for the Beyonce Experience.

First things first, I am a Beyonce fan. Not a rabid groupie, but I do love her music and I admit to being just a little excited to be at the show. Okay, okay. I was very excited. And from the time she rose from underneath the stage in an explosion of lights and glitter to the time she exited stage left two hours later, I was completely entranced. In the nosebleeds, we had to rely on the Jumbotrons but even on screen, the energy of the show was staggering.

CD Review: Tegan & Sara - 'The Con'

Mon Jul 23, 2007 at 12:12:42 PM

Tegan & Sara
The Con (Vapor/Sire)

The musical output of Canadian twins inevitably carries with it a vaguely alien air. One can just imagine Tegan & Sara in Montreal and Vancouver, respectively, engaging in some seizure-like sibling communication and spontaneously birthing The Con.

Nothing so medievally weird happened, of course, although it would make a good episode of Behind the Music. The sisters wrote their new material apart from one another, then fine-tuned everything into nuanced pop capsules. A 14-song affair where no track lasts much longer than three minutes, The Con is terse and colorful. "Relief Next to Me" starts out with playful pop hijinks before reeling into some Stevie Nicks-style drama awash in emotionally confrontational lyrics. Immediately afterward, "The Con" launches into more instrumentally dense pop, where any remnant of precious vocals is abandoned for raw delivery. "Back in Your Head" has some of the catchiness that defined "Walking With a Ghost" off So Jealous, while "Hop a Plane" channels bittersweet '90s power pop. "Dark Come Soon" stands out as one of the more polished and beautiful songs on the album, and the lyrics dissect conflicting feelings about love and isolation.

Even as Tegan & Sara become more restrained stylistically, they remain open as a band, maintaining an air of exploration throughout the new record. For this alone, they're forgiven the occasional lapse into questionable, Madonna-like British accents on The Con. -- Evan James

Last Night: Mary J. Blige at the Seminole Hard Rock Live

Fri Jul 20, 2007 at 05:07:47 PM

Mary J. Blige
July 19, 2007
Hard Rock Live

Better Than: Any lip-synching factory-made pop tart we can think of

The Review: Last night Mary J. Blige turned the Seminole Hard Rock into the Seminole Hard Soul. Rockin a one-piece black jumpsuit and some killer heels, she started the show with a mix of her older stuff, performing hit after hit after hit - she has 40 total, but blessed us with less than a dozen. Then MJB moved onto her latest album, The Breakthrough, which isn’t quite My Life or Share My World in terms of hit singles and gut-wrenching emotion, but any true fan can appreciate its vibe. Because a true fan would know that Mary has survived drug addiction, physical abuse, sexual assault and only God knows what else she hasn’t revealed. So when Mary quiets her 4-piece band and the crowd, and explains the reasons behind her song “You Can’t Hold a Good Woman Down” you forget how much you loved the 1992, tortured Mary J. and embrace this woman who declares “No More Drama” and “Enough Cryin’.” The show was amazing and showed Mary in her truest form, soul-filled vocals and undeniable swagger. Our only complaint, the show was way too short. -- Raina McLeod
