Fat Joe Looking as Sexy as Ever

Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 01:22:22 PM

fatjoe65.jpg
Ok, maybe not.

You hate to see the part-time Miami resident in such an uncompromising photo but this is just too funny to pass up. I don't know where this shot came from or if it's even real but it is NOT a good look for Joey Crack. But I still dig him though and can't help but give his latest video, "Make it Rain" some blog love.

The more you think about it though, why the hell is making it rain so damn popular? You've got money. And I guess you don't need it. That's cool--when playing Monopoly. It's rather juvenile in real life and creates an uncomfortable situation for those of us with 50 dollars in our pockets that want to just snatch up all that floating bill money but don't want to look broke in the process. I don't know. I've seen some grown men hit the ground and dive for all that cash and get laughed at in the process, but when you think about it, so what. It's probably pride that keeps people from grabbing all that cash and shoving it in their pockets. I bet the janitors at these clubs are making a fortune!! Just a thought.
Enjoy the video.

Second Phase of Ultra Line-up Announced

Thu Jan 31, 2008 at 08:55:00 AM

Thanks again Miami Nights for the heads up.

No real surprises on this second phase of the lineup for the Ultra Music Festival, except for the totally awesome addition of Underworld headlining the second night. Don't know who they are? Yes you do -- their big mainstream breakout track was "Born Slippy," or, "that really cool song from the end of Trainspotting." Besides that, they've had some really amazing tracks and albums, and their live set is said to rival Daft Punk's -- oh, snap!

Personally, I think the other most promising groupings are happening on night one, at the "DanceRock Stage" (LA Riots, Deadmau5, Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT -- again! -- and Digitalism), and for dance purists, at the Amnesia Ibiza Arena (Lee Burridge, MANDY -- please check out their latest Fabric mix -- James Zabiela, and Steve Lawler).

Flyer after the jump, but first, enjoy this video for "Born Slippy." One of the most amazing electronic songs from the Nineties, conjures up so many nostalgic memories -- I can't be the only one left who cannot wait to hear this blast over a big field again. -- Arielle Castillo

"Sensual Seduction" on the Brain

Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 01:23:15 PM

Just when you thought Snoop Dogg didn't have any creativity left.
I don't know why this song gets stuck in your head so easily. Even though Snoop's T-Pain approach gets annoying after a while, the video makes it all worth it.

Jacki-O: Rapper, Label Head, and now... Author?

Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 12:00:00 PM

Miami native and one-time TVT Recording artist Jacki-O had a tough last few years. She garnered some national attention with her 2003 single "Nookie," and "All Grown Up" became the official ring entry music for Stephanie McMahon in the WWE. But a couple years after that, things took a nosedive -- she filed for bankruptcy, and was later caught shoplifting in West Palm Beach (she pleaded no contest and got probation).

Still, things might be looking up. After leaving TVT in 2004, she formed her own label, Jackmove Entertainment, and word is she's got a spot on Trina's upcoming record.

But here's the big news... Now she's an author! Looks like she's written a book called Grown and Gangsta, a piece of urban fiction that seems, possibly, to be set in New York, by early descriptions. It's being put out by TRU Publishing, a new venture run by C-Murder. (He's out of prison, but still on house arrest, stemming from various, uh, murder-related charges, although he is allowed to work on his music career on a "per-request" basis).

The book comes out February 15, but you can preorder at Amazon.com. After the jump, read the press release. -- Arielle Castillo

A Love Letter to Rod the Mod

Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 08:55:00 AM

I don’t care about his feathered hair. I don’t care about his unfortunate fascination, in the Seventies and Eighties, with puff sleeves. Or his continuing fascination with white suits. Or the fact that, with some teenage parenting, he could technically be old enough to be my grandfather. I love Rod Stewart. Unironically. And dammit, I’m not the only one of my peer group to do so.

It’s easy to crack a joke at ol’ Rod the Mod’s expense – sure, sadly, the lingering image many casual music fans have of him is of his latter-day, slightly bloated, warbling version. But the man is a legend, a holdout from when frontmen were rock stars instead of disposable pop tarts. When men could dress prettier than their girlfriends, but still ooze an air of sexual menace and complete assurance. When they could get absolutely, sloppy drunk on a regular basis, sing as though they were crying, and come out of it fine on the other end.

Rod’s is the voice that’s launched a million soggy pub singalongs, a million sessions of sadly staring out the window while Every Picture Tells a Story self-indulgently wheels around the turntable yet again. He’s the man who backed up Jeff Beck, who gave us dirty rock and roll anthems from the Small Faces – and then the Faces, the guy who’s snagged model after model while seeming to just shrug and grin. Basically, he’s the man. So here, I offer a few rebuttals to some of the ignorant’s most common easy attacks.

Jose El Rey rules the House of Sex

Tue Jan 29, 2008 at 02:43:44 PM

If you haven't seen Jose El Rey perform around town yet ... you're missing out. How to describe the legend? He doesn't really sing, he doesn't really rap.... He just kind of is, over some tinny 808 freestyle beats. He makes ladies want him and guys want to be him. Really -- he even just snagged an entire page in Maxim en Espanol (read it on his Myspace page).

Here's his latest video, for "I Rule, the House of Sex," directed by G.I. Holmez. Sure, it's low budget -- it looks like it was mainly filmed in, perhaps, his backyard; maybe around one of those strip malls where the Gables bleeds into SW 8th St.; and onstage at Studio A (can't tell, film quality is rather dark and blurry, but it has to be there or PS14). But, he keeps it real, dancing in front of a blue screen flashing several important Miami landmarks: a Sedano's supermarket, a large outdoor poster somewhere for Que Pasa USA?, ¡Ñoooo que Barato!, and the Jamaica Motel on 8th St. Ladies, try to control yourselves as you watch.

Jose El Rey's next show is this Saturday at PS14. -- Arielle Castillo

Bedouin Soundclash at the Culture Room Tonight!!

Tue Jan 29, 2008 at 12:29:50 PM

Bedouin%20Soundclash.jpg

So if you've ever visited the ice-cold city of Toronto, you'll know that when it comes to music and culture, it's one of the biggest melting pots North America has to offer. With relaxed immigration and a stronger currency than the U.S. (ahem), Toronto isn't a bad city in which to be a musician, create a genre or two, or at least home in on the next mashup trends those gringos to the south haven't figured out yet.

Listen to the sounds coming from the city's adopted trio, Bedouin Soundclash, and you can hear different ethnic neighborhoods popping up in each song. Take their latest gem, Street Gospels, for instance. The album can have a cockney, rub-a-dub, polyphonic, two-tone, hippie-esque, or indie-rock feel, depending upon whatever song you're listening to. That's not to say the trio is all over the place or hard-to-follow. To the contrary, its blend has more to do with peering into music's future and putting the pieces together than becoming the next "it" band. It doesn't hurt that Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains fame is their main producer — a relationship Bedouin Soundclash seems to appreciate immensely.

"The thing with Darryl is he never makes you do anything," says Eon Sinclair, the group's bassist. "He always, like, offers you a bunch of different suggestions and we either try it or we can argue that we shouldn't. He's the first producer that we worked with that let us do that."

The songs that emerge on Street Gospels, like "Walls Fall Down" and "Midnight Rocker," are at times reflective of Bad Brains' ability to put the right spaces between notes, giving each instrument its own voice. This is especially important for a trio — Bedouin Soundclash is comprised of just bass, drums, and guitar — as each instrument must resonate, contributing to a whole. Jenifer's touch has been crucial in terms of bringing that sort of sound forward.

No Bedouin Soundclash/Bad Brains joint tour is in the works yet (which, even as a mere possibility, is exciting), but the two groups have graced the same stage before.

"It was for Roger's Picnic 2007 in Toronto... The lineup was actually Bedouin, Bad Brains, and then the Roots," says Sinclair, who thinks Bad Brains should have headlined. "I think the promoters were a little scared of [artistically deranged lead singer] H.R. and if he'd go crazy up on stage. But it was a great show."

Now that Bedouin Soundclash is getting its first opportunity to headline a U.S. tour, group members seem to be making a conscious decision about their supporting acts.

"We've got Westbound Train with us... They're a traditional ska band, and Beat Union from England is like the early Clash," Sinclair says. "We tried to get bands where the audience will be able to hear what our influences are."

Vampire Weekend is Just Catchy Enough

Tue Jan 29, 2008 at 12:26:22 PM

Here's a fun video from the group Vampire Weekend that's sure to stick in your head or at least make you tap your feet.

The group is out of New York if you can't already tell by their clanky style of up-top indie rock and they've got a sound that somehow puts a smile on my face. Maybe they'll have the same effect on you. Their self-titled new album is in stores today and chances are they're going to blow the fuck up all year long as people start to pay attention. Get ready for it.
They're also playing Langerado Music Festival on March 7th which is creeping up fast.
That's a weekend local music lovers definitely need to get ready for as well. If you don't have your ticket yet, hurry up and get it. The line-up is ridiculous and knowing that Vampire Weekend is on the bill just makes even more excited than I was five minutes ago.

Arsis, live at the Culture Room on Wednesday

Tue Jan 29, 2008 at 08:55:00 AM

Arsis, in classical music parlance, most commonly refers to the up-beat, or unstressed parts of a measure. The term seems an odd choice of name for a technical death metal outfit whose lyrics focus on death, defilement, and the destruction of the sacred, and whose pummeling assault leaves no room for breath, like a sonic punch to the stomach. Nothing is upbeat, nothing left unstressed.

That being said, Arsis is not entirely disinclined to throw in the occasional flourish of undistorted guitar, perhaps even allowing the occasional quarter-note to ring out from between the walls of jackhammer sludge punctuated by neck-wringing guitar workouts. Fans of the band will be glad to hear that James Malone, who had been limited to guitar by an overstressed voice, is back behind the mike, adding his strangely subtle growl back into the mix. Apparently a little bit of arsis has done him a lot of good. -- Nicholas Hall

Arsis performs with Warbringer, Exodus, and Goatwhore Wednesday, January 30 at the Culture Room, 3045 N Federal Hwy, Ft Lauderdale. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $13 in advance, or $15 at the door. All ages are welcome. Visit www.cultureroom.net or www.ticketmaster.com.

Monday Afternoon Music Fix: NERD, Thom Yorke, Stephen Malkmus and more.

Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 02:18:55 PM

By ANDY VIHSTADT

Geek Squad

NERD.jpg
"This milkshake won't bring anyone to the yard," thinks Chad to himself.

N.E.R.D. will be releasing N.3.R.D. sometime this spring. After an unfinished version of “Everyone Nose” was leaked, the group decided to post the final studio mix on its blog. The song brings the war on drugs to the club scene, calling out female cokeheads and unintentionally embarrassing those of you who legitimately need to use the ladies room.

Black Keys

The Arcade Fire seems to be reinventing the music video. “Black Mirror” is the second interactive vid from Neon Bible and this time around, users can remix the song in real time using the numbers on a keyboard. Check it out here.

Lost

Professor Murder is giving away its sophomore EP for free at RCRD LBL. Grab “Civilization Three,” the second track from Professor Murder on a Desert Island, right here. Sure, PM’s a little self-indulgent when it comes to album titles, but for narcissism at its finest, check this out.

First Phase of Marley Fest Announced...

Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 11:24:08 AM

Well, technically it's now the "15th Annual Caribbean Fest," but everybody knows it's all about the Marleys. And this year, it looks like they're getting it together musically. While the first few years were mostly reggae, and mostly Marley, things got a little scattered in the meantime. This led to some lineup experimentation that yielded some cool results (Lauryn Hill one year), and some straight-up dubious ones. (The worst had to be 2001, in which I vaguely remember watching the excellent Dead Prez ... go on after Hootie and the Blowfish! LOL!).

This year, we've got four Marleys, including the talented but sort of unsung Ky-Mani (currently on tour with Van Halen!), as well as other reggae greats like Capleton and Richie Spice! The festival takes place this year at the Bayfront Park Ampitheatre on March 1. Press release after the jump (sorry it's in all caps), and more to be posted as we get them. -- Arielle Castillo

Concert Review: David Allan Coe Brings Ghosts to the Culture Room

Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 10:47:25 AM

David%20Allan%20Coe.jpg

David Allan Coe
Saturday, January 26
Culture Room, Fort Lauderdale

Better Than: An awkward car trip with the ghost of a country legend.

Saturday was the first time I’d seen David Allan Coe since a show he did in Fort Worth, at Billy Bob’s Texas. It was his first gig there after a 20-year ban, his sentence for once performing a song called “Nigger Fucker.” The night of his return, he was so belligerently drunk that I honestly wondered if he would die right in front of us, right there on stage. His handlers propped him up on a chair, strapped a guitar to him, and pointed a microphone in his direction. Moving only to sip his bourbon, he slurred through lyrics, stopping several times when he forgot the words to songs he’s sung for more than 30 years. He refused to play any of his popular songs (by popular, I mean full-on sing-along anthems to country music fans). At one point, he appeared to cry as he mumbled about the death of his good friend, Waylon Jennings. I thought I was witnessing the final days of an American icon.

But at 68-years-old, DAC showed up at the Culture Room Saturday to prove he is still alive and ready for a bar brawl. With white hair down to his hips and chin hair braided red, white and blue – so long he has to push it aside to strum – he walked on stage and flicked off the audience. Then he leaned over his belt buckle, picked up his electric guitar (painted like a rebel flag) and began rocking.

Concert Review: 3 Inches of Blood and the Black Dahlia Murder

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 01:33:46 PM

Hate Eternal, 3 Inches of Blood, and the Black Dahlia Murder
Wednesday, January 23, 2008
The Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale

Better Than:Oh, making offerings to false metal gods?

The Review:It's always a reassuring sign when, after driving almost an hour in torrential rain, one is greeted at a venue's entrance by security guards waving metal detectors. (Hey, they were absent from this very same venue when I came to watch indie acts Hot Hot Heat and Louis XIV a couple of weeks ago!) Still, this hardly seemed like a stabby crowd -- who has time to cut a bitch when there is major air riffage to be played?

Thanks to the torrential downpour, I missed opening act Hate Eternal. Further, Decrepit Birth didn't make it at all, so soon after I arrived it was already time for 3 Inches of Blood, hailing from Vancouver. By now, the inside of Culture Room was a morass. For the rest of the evening, my eyes would continuously water, thanks to an acrid atmosphere pungent with weed smoke, sweat, damp denim, and dirty hair, all boiling at a temperature befitting Dante. The male pheromones were almost tangible as the band took the stage.

Ali Campbell Quits UB40

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 10:43:46 AM

Ali%20Campbell.jpg

I'm not sure how a band like UB40 can start having irreconcilable differences after almost 30 years of reggae bliss, but British band, UB40 is parting ways with its lead singer, Ali Campbell.
According to this story, Campbell says he's been upset with the band's management for awhile and couldn't put up with it anymore.
That's possible. Strange, but entirely plausible given the fact that what he's upset about is money.
UB40 on the other hand quickly released a statement saying that Campbell was leaving the band in order to pursue his solo career, which is something that's long been rumored. Campbell, in fact, does have a new album coming out this year.

In case you have no idea who in the hell UB40 is...you will after you play the video below.
