Pelican to Play Culture Room on November 15

Just confirmed today: Chicago instrumental almost-metal quartet (and friends of Miami's Torche) Pelican will play its biggest headlining show to date in South Florida on November 15. As the band has grown in popularity, it's played in these parts a couple times over the last few years years. Once was with the Japanese act Mono, at Churchill's, in May of '06, and earlier this year at Revolution.

That latter show wasn't really a good fit for the band -- they opened for Circa Survive and Thrice, and suffered from muffled sound, an insanely early (7 p.m.) time slot, and a very young crowd who chattered through the entire set. Although it would be really cool to see them at Churchill's again, according to New Art School promoter Dominic Sirianni, who booked the November gig (and occasionally writes for New Times), the band wasn't too into Churchill's after its last show there. Boo! Anyways, that pretty much leaves Culture Room, which lately seems to be the place for a bizarre array of all subgenres of underground metal.

Openers are the very cool experimental Brooklyn outfit Kayo Dot -- woodwinds! gamelan! mellotron! soprano clarinet! -- and Stephen Brodsky, an equally bearded, experimental fellow from Massachusetts.

Tickets are $12, and go on sale through Ticketmaster on September 19. -- Arielle Castillo
