What's the Deal with the Weird Stereotypes on DJ Laz's New Single?

The other day, during a rare occasion of listening to terrestrial radio, I tuned into Power 96, only to eventually hear a confused, all-over-the-place song about, well, a woman's high potential for finding a sex partner. When my iPhone's Shazam application couldn't tag it (and it tags everything, even random Pitbull house remixes), I knew it had to be some kind of uber-local production destined for permanent obscurity.

With its generic, beeping club-rap beat and chanted chorus, I figured it was the work of some Miami rapper-come-lately. So imagine my surprise when the DJ announced it was actually the work of Power 96's own DJ Laz, titled "She Can Get It."

Holy crap. Remember when DJ Laz made fun, creative freestyle and Miami bass songs? The guy is something of a local legend, but seems to have made a major misstep with this ultra-generic, tired-sounding single. At one point, a guest rapperguest rapper Mims ("This Is Why I'm Hot") rhymes about the girl being able to get it in a "Murcielago or a Civic" -- oh boy. Everyone knows the economy sucks -- no random-ass rapper is it's doubtful that Mims is really driving a Murcielago (apparently the latest mainstream-rap car of choice), and fronting like he could in these times isn't just silly, it's really... pathetic. As in full of pathos -- pitiable.

What's more, why does DJ Laz insist on rapping on the track as well? His raspy, halting flow sounds like a creepy uncle, and he uses it to deliver the absolute worst line of the song:

"I'm Cuban, but my money's Jewish."

What on earth is that supposed to mean?

Sigh. DJ Laz is called DJ, and not MC Laz, for a reason. He should stick to doing what he does best -- making Miami-flavored party jams that everyone can feel good about, not weak attempts at something else that inadvertently throw in racial/ethnic stereotypes. Someone please convince me that the rest of his latest album, Category 6, is better than this. -- Arielle Castillo
