New Times' Soundboard Jams Series Continues Tonight at Churchill's

​Raffa and Rainer's beloved Can You Rock a Little Softer night long ago moved on from Churchill's. But for the summer, at least, you can still get your Wednesday night fix of local acoustic music at the sort-of English pub. As we reported here before on Crossfade, the weekly event, sponsored by New Times, Epiphone, and EMI, is sort of an open-mike-plus. Local performers submitted their demos for consideration, which were then culled by industry types at EMI.

Voila, the final lineups, spread across every Wednesday until September 2. Although this is a laid-back kind of thing, a few performers will win an Epiphone guitar and a live recording of their Churchill's sets.

Alan Hughes - This Buenos Aires transplant describes his sound as "Bowie went to Berlitz and took a stroll in a South American desert." Funnily enough, this is kind of accurate -- songs like "Baktun III" sound a little like parallel-universe outtakes from Hunky Dory.

August Campbell - This sort of Jimmy-Buffett-sounding fellow gained some notoriety back in the days of 45s  for writing "The I-95 'Asshole' Song." It still stands up today -- click here to listen.

Jon Singer - I'm tapped out of clever jokes about this guy's name; insert your own here. A BMI published songwriter fella, this guy specializes in some slightly creepy Americana that would fit well into an episode of True Blood. That's a compliment.

Also performing are Jay, Sean Fox, and Carlos Gonzalez.
