Sources Say Opium Group Moving in on Mokai, One Step Closer to South Beach Monopoly

Well it isn't exactly news that Mokai "closed for renovations" -- code word usually for closed for good -- a few weeks ago. Well, Talk Nightlife reports that a source claims Opium Group has signed a letter of intent for Mokai. Although it says "nothing concrete," we wouldn't exactly be surprised of the news considering the company recently took ownership of Cameo, a mega-club hardly a block away from its "most-beloved club" Mansion.

Much like the Cameo and Mansion proximity, if the rumor turns out to be true, Mokai's location is close to both Louis at the Gansevoort South and Wall Lounge located inside the W South Beach.

But what does this mean for South Beach? One Talk Nightlife poster says, "Might as well toss up a rope and a Frenchman on the MacArthur and Venetian Causeways and be done with it." The theory isn't too far fetched honestly. With one company controlling the vast majority of nightclubs this could turn South Beach into a homogeneous clubland of excess and bottle service, something that its arguably already become.

There is no denying you've done a lot for the area Opium Group, but how about we leave some for the rest?

We've emailed the company asking them to confirm the news but at this time haven't received a response.
