Haiti Mizik Relief, This Weekend at Bayfront Park

If you've been paying attention to the news--and it's almost impossible not to at a time like this--you've no doubt witnessed the horrors our poor Caribbean neighbors in Haiti have endured since a major earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter mag scale all but obliterated the small impoverished country sharing Hispaniola with the D.R. last Tuesday. And never mind the second one that hit yesterday. In the face of such devastation and massive loss of human life, what little one can do to help--sending $5 or $10 dollars, or donating canned goods--really does feel insignificant. But it's important to remember that every little bit helps, and the people of Haiti need that help now more than ever.

Adding a few humble grains of sand to the effort, Haiti Mizik Relief Benefit Concert, taking place this Saturday and Sunday in the Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront park. The two day event, brought to you by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, WDNA 88.9 FM, DWNTWN Miami and the New Times, is being billed as an opportunity for the community to come together in support and to raise money for the cause, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting The Red Cross.

Among those being featured on the massive lineup are Haitian big band The Dixie Band, local Grammy-nodded Locos Por Juana, Afro-funk fusionistas Spam Allstars, Latin-world-fusion jam band Lanzallamas Monofonica, Suenalo, Afrobeta, Jahfe, Kazak International, Conjunto Progreso and Jean P Jam, just to throw out a few.
