Q&A with Saheed About His New Video "The Ups"

Saheed is a 21-year-old Dade County spitfire with a new video for a song called "The Ups," featuring a beat produced by Numonics. The Mupalia Pictures video follows Saheed from the time he wakes up to when he walks outside to find his car has been towed on South Beach (fuck the beach towing mafia). By the end of the mini movie he's partying with a bunch of friends in a backyard. The classic feelgood hip hop sound of the record meshes well the Miami visual. If anybody from HBO's Entourage is reading this you should license this song for the show. Crossfade spoke with Saheed about the song, here's what he had to say...

Crossfade: Where did the song come from?

Saheed: We did that originally for Numonics album. It was released about two months ago and I was lucky enough that one of the songs I did was on it.

Was that your room in the video?

That's not my actual room. Just some hotel room they had rented for the video. The Mupalia film crew is mad professional. They had the room, the car, the towing service, the model, and everything for that video.

Did they put up the house and friends for the party scene?

Nah, that was my engineer's house. That's my homie and we usually have parties there a lot. Those are our people.

What's the inspiration behind the lyrics?

I was inspired by the beat itself. The beat has a sample with the lady saying "life has its ups and downs." I like making music that people can relate to. Those are just natural feelings you don't got to think too hard to write down. it just comes easy.

Yours isn't the typical style of music popular in Miami.

Everybody has their own style of music that they like. I don't really like to complain. I don't knock any music. I just turned 21 years old. I just do my thing. This is the music I like making the most for myself, that I can relate to myself. I don't really go out clubbing and do all that crazy shit to be able to rap about it. Mostly I just talk about life situations that a lot of other people go through as well. I just have good fun making my music. I feel like setting a goal and accomplishing something. It's a blessing when people tell me they relate to my songs. Every kind word is appreciated.

How far you trying to go with the music?

As far as we can get it. As far as I can go. I been doing a lot as far as local shows. Now I'm trying to expand, go out of state, overseas, and all that.

You from down here?

Born in Chicago. Moved down here since kindergarten.
