Sloppy Seconds, the Spits, NoBunny, and More This Saturday: Signs of Improved Churchill's Booking

Churchill's seems to be humming along with a renewed energy lately, thanks to the semi-recent addition of booker Nayra Serrano. Under her watch, the venue (finally!) got an updated web site, an up-to-date online schedule, and a slate of shows by an increased number of touring bands, with an overall greater quality control.

This Saturday's shebang, though, should prove to be her biggest booking coup yet. Billed as "a night of skate punk, garage punk, drunk rock, rock and roll madness," the show gets together three national headliners from two different tours, plus a grab-bag of the city's best like-minded acts.

In one corner, there are NoBunny, from Oakland, and the Spits, from Seattle. Both are currently making a national trek together, and both outfits specialize in scuzzed-up, gonzo punk-styled rock and roll. (The former often does so, um, in half of a bunny suit.) In the other, Indianapolis punk greats Sloppy Seconds, who are touring in support of the 20th anniversary of their deliciously sleazy and simplistic sophomore album, Destroyed.

Finally, we have a number of Miami acts who carry a similar musical torch: Furious Dudes, Lil Daggers, Enough, and the Can't Stand Ya's. Note the door time, though. Serrano promises the show will start promptly at 8:30 p.m., perhaps unseasonably early for Churchill's, but ensuring it won't be a drag to stick around for the headliners.

Sloppy Seconds, with Nobunny, the Spits, Furious Dudes, Lil Daggers, and others. 8 p.m. Saturday, June 5. Churchill's Pub, 5501 NE 2nd Ave., Miami. Tickets cost $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Age 18 and up; 305-757-1807; churchillspub.com
