School of Seven Bells Will Pick Your Pockets With Guitars October 16

Hidden somewhere in the thick mist and jagged rock of the Andes Mountains, there's a secret training academy for professional pickpockets and it's called the School of Seven Bells. Now, maybe this whole thing is a myth, but no one really knows. Even Interpol and the NYPD refuse to fully deny the school's existence. There are just too many exquisite thieves in our midst.

Anyway, truth or not, strange stories like this one don't just go away. And in the case of the School of Seven Bells, three Brooklyn musicians -- sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza, and Benjamin Curtis -- saw a PBS documentary, borrowed the brand, and recorded a pair of albums steeped in the drama, mystery, and magic of the band's namesake.

Indeed, the most recent collection of Seven Bells songs, this year's Disconnect from Desire, could easily soundtrack a slow ascent into fog, thin air, and altered consciousness. But sometimes the music is so unabashedly breathless and blissed-out that it gives off unsettlingly echoes of Enya. Just hold your breath, though, because mostly it's something like soundful sleight of hand.

Saturday, October 16, at Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $10 in advance via wantickets.com. 305-377-2277; grandcentralmiami.com.
