Afro Kumbe Kick Off 2011 With Not One But Two Gigs This Friday

Mark Kondrat, Itagui Correa and Javier "Lakambre" Delgado are collectively known as Locos Por Juana, or in their DJ set incarnation, Afro Kumbe.

Already, these three dudes are off to a busy start this year, wasting no time in getting AK in front of Miami's craziest crowds. This Friday, they'll bring their electronica-laced Latin hybrid of cumbia, champeta, and funk to not one but two separate crowds in the same night.

And somewhere between those two shows, they'll find time to put on their Locos hats and headline Art in the Park.

But before you have an MMF flashback, fear not. It's nothing like that. Afro Kumbe kicks off the night at Grand Central, where they'll open for another band that deftly weaves their native country's Afro rhythms with modern electronic sounds, Novalima from Peru. Then they'll cut on over to Transit Lounge where they'll be offering another set following Nag Champyons. Which means you'll have two opportunities to catch their killer live set, with Grand Central running you $20 to catch them and Novalima, and a free show at Transit if you're not particularly into their Peruvian homies and just want to catch the local boys.

It's a fitting start to 2011, considering that Kondrat, Correa and Delgado are plotting big things for Afro Kumbe this year.

"In store for Afro Kumbe this Year,(due to the massive amount of requests," says Kondrat, "is an EP which will be released on our own Independent Label, La Juana Music, in the Spring Time."

He goes on to say, "Also, we are heading out to L.A. and San Fran in April for a 2 Week Tour, spreading the "Electro-Parranda" sound of Afro Kumbe to the West Coast and beyond."
