Ricky Martin Pops Studio Tr3s' Cherry and Makes Our Ears Bleed

Ricky Martin, Crossfade's favorite author, recently performed in front of about 200 people at a special mini-concert for an upcoming MTV Tr3s series called Studio Tr3s. We were lucky enough to be at the studio for the production, and saw firsthand how a bicultural, bilingual variety show comes to life.

The painstakingly long process began at around 7 p.m. when we arrived at Miami's Comtel Studios.
Fans were already lined up at the building's gate, waiting to pass through a metal detector and into the tricked-out TV studio. While many of the people in attendance won tickets through a radio promotion involving Martin's Twitter account, others simply had connections.

Crossfade managed to nab one of the concert goers and asked him how he scored tickets for the special performance. "I have a friend that used to work here at MTV," said Mario Garza. "And she sent me an email saying that Ricky Martin was going to be here." "You're a big fan though, right?" we asked. "I mean, I like him. But it's not like I love him," he replied.

Determined to find a true Martin obsessive, we skipped the line, walked past security, and straight onto the sound stage. At first, we simply watched the crowd shuffle through the doors hoping to find someone wearing a Ricky Martin t-shirt. But no one showed up in Ricky regalia. So after wandering aimlessly about the studio for a few minutes, we settled into a spot near the back, next to some people that looked like industry folks -- producers, managers, groupies, etc.

Shortly after 7:30, the director cued the audience's "energy, applause," and yelled "music." In came Martin holding a microphone and singing "Mas," the first track off his upcoming release, Musica + Alma + Sexo.

It was loud and poppy. But Ricky sounded out-of-sync with his backing band. "I want it to rock," Martin told the crowd after the first attempt. "So we're going to do it again."

After a short break and a little crowd rearranging, Martin was ready to make his entrance all over again, thanking the crowd members for their patience before walking through the audience and onto the stage to join his band. He wrapped up "Mas" and the director gave the go-ahead for a Q&A with the show's hosts, Carlos Santos and Karelix Alicea.

A few segments later, Spanish pop star Natalia Jimenez joined Ricky on stage for a special performance of "Lo Mejor de Mi Vida Eres Tú," and it only took one take. But when it when it came time for the Puerto Rican prince to perform "Shine," he had to rely on a teleprompter for the lyrics. He told the crowd that there were a lot of "tongue twisters" in the song after the first take. And just when Ricky launched into a second attempt, Crossfade decided it was the perfect time for a trip to the shitter.

Following our tour of the men's room, Crossfade was back just in time for a revised version of "Cup of Life." And though it felt more like a jazzercise class than the 1998 World Cup, we were happy to hear a familiar song. Sadly, "Livin' la Vida Loca" was not on the set list.

Running well behind schedule and the planned 9:30 wrap time, we left the studio immediately following the second take of Martin's performance with reggaetoneros Wisin Y Yandel, and the audience Q&A portion of the show.

It was after 10. And we had already learned that a night with Ricky Martin as a featured guest on an MTV Tr3s variety show may sound fucking great on paper. But it's about as exciting as watching Crossfade write this blog. The magic of television isn't so magical after all.

Studio Tr3s, featuring Ricky Martin with special guests Natalia Jimenez and Winsin y Yandel premiers February 12 on MTV Tr3s.

what's wrong with new times paying writers such as this one... and actually allowing this writer to post this review. i'm not a fan of ricky martin now mtvtr3s, so don't think i'm defending them. This writer's review is extremely unprofessional and redundant. who cares that you're going to the "shitter"... you sound like you went to cover this event because you had to or you would've been fired, it is also evident that you're not passionate in any shape or form about your job, and are completely disrespectful of it. "But it's about as exciting as watching Crossfade write this blog." this should be shown to the big bosses at New Times and have you fired. everyone knows that taping of a tv show is long and tedious, your job is not to cover that, but the overall performance and environment of the event.

Apparently the only person who was not a true Ricky Martin fan was the person writing this article. I was one of the fans as were most of the people who were there that night. Thanks to MTV Tr3’s, I was able to experience one of the most greatest nights of my life with an amazing performer. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Being joined by artists like Natalia Jimenez, and Wisin y Yandel was an unexpected surprise. The interviews were great and showed what a genuine person he is. It may have taken a bit longer than scheduled, but I could have been there all night. I would be more than honored to take part in any of MTV3’s future events as this one was spectacular.

If you haven't got anything nice or positive to say about Ricky Martin, Then don't say it. He is a beautiful and wonderful man, who is living his life as he pleases. :-D His music is the best.

You know this article is a joke! I was the first one to get there(9am) and one of the last ones to leave the place(by 10:40pm) and I am honored to be part of this exclusive, one in a life time, private, cosy concert! He is great, very generous, attentive to his fans, and very professional. The MTV Tr3s and Ricky did a marvelous job, too bad that I can't say it about your litle senseless, lacking in content article. But it's ok buddy sometimes we get it right and sometimes, just like this one we get it wrong!!! Sorry, and thanks for clarifying what really didn't happen that night! :)

Seriously, this blog sounds like a true Ricky hater. I am so thankful for this mini concert opportunity since I have never in my life been so close to any artist. I was there front and center! Litteraly was the second person there waiting in line ( got there at 10 am) because he is one of my favorite people, have loved him since Menudo. He truly embraces the crowd, gives it his all, is charismatic, and very humble. He is always smiling from ear to ear, his voice is super sexy, and the way he moves can drive any woman ( or man) crazy! I understand people have different perspectives, but from what I saw, it was the complete opposite of what is described here on this blog. Everyone was singing along, people were enthusiastic, screaming, getting handshakes, hugs & kisses, even a picture from a fan that officially would have been kicked out by pulling out their camera. Anonther woman got a happy birthday song from him and the crowd. It was truly AMAZING experience. And everyone had a great time.

As far as the time goes, i think people would have stayed till 5 in the morning if they were given the opportunity- i would have and i was there since 10 am! So that's bs about the show supposed to wrap up at 930. Who in their right mind would not have gone to an event that normally would cost $650 to have front row and complain about it not being done at 930?!

I have been to Ricky's concerts before and I have to say he is truly remarkable onstage! You get more than what you pay for. For me, he is right up there with Shakira, Justin T., Pink- all amazing live performers. Plus he doesn't lip sing either like a whole bunch of others that do.

Ricky is a person that inspires people in every aspect. I bet that most peple that have never gone to a Ricky concert because they aren't fans would absolutely change their perspective. He is a person that you gravitate to and can only feel good energy from. I am and will continue to be a Ricky admirer and fan! Love his music- its music that makes you feel and move!

P.S. I don't think its necessary to have a t shirt with ricky's face on it to show you are a fan. I think his fan base is a more mature crowd too, we don't need all the bells and whistles!

I love you Ricky!!

I am sitting here after having read this article, shaking my head and am genuinely upset. I, along with all of us and some great new friends I’ve made who were at MTV’s Studio nice and early have not stopped talking about what an amazing night we all shared. MTV Tr3’s & Ricky Martin provided us with an unforgettable experience (let’s not forget, completely for FREE. I would have paid anything for this experience). Having arrived at 11:30am personally gave me the opportunity to be one of the lucky FANS up front and center at main stage. This was a studio taping. Takes are expected, impromptu’s, all that is part of the magic. And Monday night was Magic! The energy in that studio, the vibe Ricky set, it’s why he’s the global star he is. One of the most genuine, humble, true people anyone could hope to spend time with. On that note, I welcomed the retakes. We all were saying, “ I can do this forever ! “ in reference to retakes; who would deny seeing another live (EXCLUSIVE) performance? I would do it all again in a heartbeat. This event was very organized and executed perfect in my book. I am a true Ricky Martin fan and can speak for all of us who were there and can say that what we experienced @MTV Tr3’s Studios will not be erased. Jump on @TWITTER and you’ll see all the Positivity and Gratitude that has flooded out as a result- Let that be your article.

The lines were arranged like this: VIP fan club members, radio contest winners, general admission and execs. They let in a small portion of the general admission and all the vip fan club members first who got to stand concert center. Execs were scattered all over the back here and there and the general admission people for the most part filled up the rest. Yes, some people there might have been invited by "who they knew" but if you listened correctly, the majority of the people there were his fans. Did the screaming not give it away? Ricky's fans are not 15 anymore so they are not going to show up with silly tees and signs. Leave that to Bieber fans. I was lucky to be amongst the vip club members right in the center. I am a huge fan though not the "screaming" " throw me a towel" kind. This CD is new and being released on February 1st. It is the first time he performed it. It's for tv. Nothing wrong with doing retakes. The version Mas which he had to redo with the teleprompter was the Spanish version. Again, first time and for tv. Who cares. Us fans saw it as a chance to listen to him yet again. He did Vuelve twice which happens to be my favorite song. Needless to say, I was ecstatic.

I came away confirming, yet again, what I already knew. He is an amazing performer, humble, grateful for his fans and just a good person. He gave the fans all the time in the world and believe me, they were screaming some crazy stuff up front. One of the women by me was celebrating her birthday. He went into an impromptu accapella version of the birthday song with his band joining in and everyone dancing to it. I had a great time despite the length of the process.

I am saddened that you took up a potential spot of someone who would have really loved to be there. I would love for you to see him in concert. Even my husband who has never been a fan danced and left with a newfound respect for him once he experienced it.
