Five Crap Pop Hits Worse Than Rebecca Black's "Friday"

Categories: Talking Shit

Is Rebecca Black really pop music's worst offender?
Six million of you have already endured it. Gawker asked if it was "the worst music video ever." Meanwhile, foreign press like The Sydney Morning Herald wonders why it has overtaken the Japanese earthquake and tsunami devastation on Twitter.

Of course, we're talking about the gone-viral-for-all-the-wrong-reasons video of unknown Rebecca Black's "Friday." In the song, she muses on which seat in a car should she occupy, gives us a lesson on the days of the week (Saturday comes after Friday, in case you were wondering), and delivers an odd pronunciation of the word Friday, sounding something like "Fry-dai."

Add to that a frozen expression of elation, an odd rap break, and a creepy Los Angeles label who seems to do this sort of thing all the time, and you can see why the world is captivated with Black.

But is it really the worse song ever produced? Is it any different than all the other crap that the music industry is continually churning out? Let us make the case on behalf of Black, starting with the offending video.

5. Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"

Say what you will about Black, at least she doesn't base her entire (short) career on someone else's work. Lady Gaga continues to rip off acts like Madonna, Grace Jones, ABBA, Ace of Base, Björk, Peaches, and more. And we continue to forgive her because she's "so original."

4. Britney Spears's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"

Britney Spears has a habit of butchering other people's work. First, it was Sonny & Cher's "Beat Goes On," then the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," and quite possibly the most offending was her cover of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. The original version was sexy in a bitch-that-might-beat-you-up sort of way. The world wouldn't know how crazy Spears actually was until a few years later.

3. Jessie J's "Do It Like A Dude"

You know what's worse than Katy Perry? A cheap Katy Perry knock-off.

2. Black Eyed Peas's "Boom Boom Pow"

Really, we could have picked anything created by these unapologetic pop foursome. There's been plenty of cringe-worthy lyrics, particularly since Fergie joined in 2003. But when "Boom Boom Pow" hit the airwaves, we thought there was no way in hell the American public would put up with them any longer. We were wrong.

1. Aqua's "Barbie Girl"

You, America, pushed this song to the number seven spot on the Billboard Hot 100 back when it was a lot harder to top the charts. That means several of you went into an actual physical music store and purchased an actual physical copy of Aqua's mega-hit. Nuff said.

We're not saying Rebecca Black's "Friday" is any better than these tracks. But we are a nation that loves bad pop music, as we've pointed out above.

I think I've done a better crap song than this by reincarnating Barry White with some of the dodgiest lyrics imaginable. And it gets stuck in your head. I know I'm the king of love.

Judging by the video, I think that the song was created for the 5-9 year old age group.

I want to know why barbie girl is number one. It's a classic. It's everyone's favorite song to hate but everyone knows the lyrics and its just fun. I can think of much worse pop songs... like Friday for example

I like Gaga do I disagree completely there, but even the rest...Sorry...Are all better than Friday. They're all better. Please find worse if you want to knock Rebecca Black out of the top (bottom?) spot. lol

You're just a hater of Gaga and Jessie J if you associate their brilliant work with Rebecca Black's voice/video. Maybe this "Friday" song is just making fun of other artists and their silly written songs... but it's certainly not to be even COMPARED to Lady gaga OR Jessie J. Step off, bro.

Hmm... not sure about the Jessie J/Katy Perry slam. Jessie J has a well-trained voice that doesn't need the autotune that they put over it— plus she writes her own music (and music for other pop stars) and has fought her label about trying to repress her sexual orientation to boost record sales. Her statement about female masculinity may not be entirely tasteful, but at least isn't as insipid and male-gaze pandering as Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl."

I agree a lot with "Born this way" it does take a lot from older artists. There is a part in the song which is very similar to Madonna's "Vogue". I feel like "Do it like a dude" isn't that bad, its not amazing, but its not top five bad.

OKAY, HOW CAN YOU EVEN THINK FOR A SECOND THAT THAT PIECE OF SH*T BY WHATS HER NAME BLACK CAN EVEN COME CLOSE TO COMPETING WITH BOOM BOOM POW AND BORN THIS WAY??? THEY ARE BOTH AMAZING SONGS AND IF YOU DISAGREE GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS AND THINK A LITTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

None of the songs you posted are good, I'll give you that, but at least the public liked them. Some of them have a feel good vibe. Reaction music is not a scientific or conscious reaction, it's straightly emotional so the point is although these songs were never the best of their time, at least they were enjoyed in their time...Rebecca Black's song is just stupid and it doesn't show off any talent that she might possibly possess.

Lady Gaga in no form deserves to be on this list. I think you are confusing copying another artists work with taking inspiration from the past. Madonna, you mean the Marylin Monroe copycat, all take aspects of culture that came before them, for example Kay Perry's Firework blatantly COPIED Erasure's "Always". Believe it or not, though GaGa "rips off" old artists who have come before, all that she is really doing is taking over control of the torch, she achieves things that all these other singers are afraid to do, the only reason everyone is so hard on her is because they assumed that this avant-grade form of art was never tried before, and once they found similarities between her and past artist their first reaction was "she copied", apparently inspiration has no meaning.

She has a really unsettling way of saying/singing "Friday." Maybe it's the autotune.

Oh no! I'd hoped that Jessie J's "Do It Like a Dude" would just sink into obscurity. I couldn't be sure if it was meant to be a joke or not - kind of like "Friday".

I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD GO JUMP INFRONT OF A 18-WHEELER TRUCK BECAUSE IF YOU THINK BORN THIS WAY IS WORSE THAN THAT SHIT YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO LIVE!!!

Yea, you really can't hate on Jessie J. She's more of an Alicia Keys type artist than a mainstream pop artist, although she is finally breaking into the mainstream. She has one hell of a voice and a fashionable style that doesn't go over the top like Gaga or Katy Hudson.

Born This Way is one of the best songs ever written. How it can be even associated with this "thing"...it doesn't deserve to be called a song...is incomprehensible to me.

Kundsefs

I like Jessie J, but I feel that Do It Like a Dude was not a good song, it's catchy, but showed nothing unique or different about her, just how crazy she can be. Don't get me wrong, she totally showed her uniqueness with Price Tag, which I loved :)

You expect pop music to be WAY to straightforward, maybe if you actually addressed Gaga's work as ART rather than pop garbage you would see it for what it truly is. as much as you would like to argue it, every single aspect of Gaga's work has some kind of metaphorical and symbolic meaning behind, whether it be a political statement or a reference to another artist or body of work.
