It's always fun when a band chooses an ironic name. Like the Uruguayan rock ensemble No Te Va Gustar (You're Not Going To Like It), with whom we couldn't disagree more wholeheartedly.

NTVG's style is fundamentally catchy, and heavily reminiscent of '90s bands out of neighboring Argentina's better known scene, like La Mosca Tse Tse, Los Enanitos Verdes, or even seminal rockeros Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. But beyond merely pop-rock, NTVG's approach is based on varied influences.

"For those that don't know us, No Te Va Gustar is a band that's characterized by its eclecticism," says drummer Diego Bartaburu. "We have songs that draw on rock, reggae, tango, murga Uruguaya, chacarera, Argentine zamba, punk, ska, and even electro."

"All the albums we've put out until now have been very different," he explains. "We listen to a lot of different styles. We're made up of nine different people with different tastes, and that's reflected in our music."

Like a couple of the aforementioned bands, NTVG formed in the early '90s, back when its founding members were only teens. Since then, the band has grown and matured, evolving into a larger group, and finding much success along the way. And not just in its native Uruguay. Throughout Latin America NTVG has secured its status, with five albums and sold-out shows in such venerable venues as Luna Park in Buenos Aires. But now the crew's got its sights set on the U.S., with the Stateside debut of Por Lo Menos Hoy, just released on June 21 and a tour kicking off tonight at Grand Central.

"We have high expectations," Bartaburu says, noting that it will be NTVG's second time in Miami. "The first time [we were here] really surprised us a lot. It went much better than we even expected. We're very excited to break into this new market, because aside from the support we always receive from Uruguayans and Argentinians, we want to introduce ourselves to the huge Latino population here in the states."

No Te Va Gustar. Monday, July 4. Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets cost $30 via fla.vor.us. Call 305-377-2277 or visit grandcentralmiami.com.
