Hunx and His Punx Announce Sailor Jerry Show at The Stage September 9

Somehow, Sailor Jerry knows what we want to hear.

Over the last couple of years, the booze brand has brought Austin's Strange Boys to town while hosting shows by Miami's own Jacuzzi Boys. And this time, Jerry and crew are importing a gayishly fabulous band with a 1960s rock 'n' roll feel -- Hunx and His Punx -- for a night at The Stage.

Signed to Hardly Art, the Oakland band has been causing quite a stir over the past year. Headed up by Seth Bogard, formerly of the electro act Gravy Train!!!!, Bogard and gang sound like a queer punk Shangri-Las.

Hunx is backed by four ladies, his Punkettes: Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams, Michelle Santamaria, Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein. And their getups and aesthetic are a nice little mix of early John Waters, Quintron, and deliciously tacky '70s glam.

Hunx and His Punx have some notable friends too. They first toured with the late Jay Reatard and Nobunny, who cowrote some of their songs. Their debut album Gay Singles speaks volumes with the name alone, a compilation of hard to find and out of print seven-inch singles.

Their recent release, Too Young to Be in Love, received an impressive 7.2 rating on Pitchfork, which noted, "the band is all smiles and gleefully reveling in sock-hop pastiche." Too Young was recorded in the same studio in New York as was once used by Ronnie Spector, one of Hunx's heroes, and produced by Ivan Julian of Richard Hell and the Voidoids.

There's pretty much nothing to not like about these guys, unless you're a cranky old homophobe or you don't like rock 'n' roll. But then Hunx don't like you either.

Hunx and His Punx with the Coathangers and Lil Daggers, presented by Sailor Jerry Rum. Friday, September 9. The Stage, 179 NE 38th St., Miami. The show starts at 9 p.m. and admission is free with RSVP to hunx.sailorjerrypresents.com. Call 305-576-9577 or visit thestagemiami.com.
