Spank Rock's New Video Mixes David Lynch With Sesame Street

It's been five years since Philly-based MC Spank Rock's last full-length record. And if the first two singles from his highly anticipated new album are any indication, the record is sure to reflect half a decade of dilligent writing, rewriting, mixing, remixing and mastermind-level tinkering.

Spank's 2006 album  YoYoYoYoYo was comprised of twelve dense tracks built on interwoven layers of classic hip-hop lyricism, baudy party rap raunch, and forward-thinking indie-electro production. Like the title of the record would suggest, the music was just as unhinged and ready for action as a face-numb playboy trying to holla'atcha.

Well, Spank Rock's new album is called Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar, and the first single, "Energy" -- a Brit-mod-R&B-n'-roll burner -- was a total departure from everything the MC had previously done. But that was nothing compared to the mindfuck of the album's second single-slash-video "DTF DADT."

Spank Rock's lyrics detail a vomitorium's worth of decadence. So it's no surprise the video -- directed by Philly-based music video duo Scott and Karl, who have also done videos for Big Freedia and Toro Y Moi, among others -- takes place at a party.

However, this party is some kind of David Lynch-meets-Sesame-Street nightmare where partygoers trying to play an innocuous game of charades, are murdered by, uh, shapes hungry for blood.

The monochromatic quirk depicted onscreen goes well with "DTF DADT"s brittle industrial stomp. It's almost like Spank Rock is actually completing the transition from eclectic hip-hop to post-genre perfection that Kanye West pretends to be achieving by crying through Auto-Tune.
