The Cool Kids Announce Miami Show at Eve October 23
Chuck Inglish and Sir Michael Rocks broke onto the scene the way so many groups do these days -- the internet. The two dudes met via Myspace, the now-irrelevant networking site, dropped two sick mixtapes -- That's Stupid and Gone Fishing -- then garnered mad indie blog buzz to back it all up.
Two EPs and a number of guest spots later, The Cools Kids finally released When Fish Ride Bicycles earlier this year, their debut record on Green Label Sounds.
Collaboratively produced by The Neptunes, Travis Barker, and The Cool Kids themselves, critics gave When Fish Ride Bicycles top marks for its fusion of old-school hip-hop and contemporary swag.
A good example of old-meets-new, Ghostface Killah's verse on "Penny Hardaway," a track about balling Penny Hardaway-style over a Wu-Tang-like beat.
"They shootin' stars these ruthless bars/Got white girls holding their mouths like, "Oh, my God! No, he didn't!"/Give him a bib, 'cause he keeps spitting lines that so cold where every word's frostbitten."
Though it's technically their first record, The Cool Kids have outdone themselves with When First Ride Bicycles and cemented their name as one of hip-hop's freshest crews. We'll just have to wait and see whether their live set matches up.
The Cool Kids with Jasmine Solano and featuring performances by Sean Rose, Quest, and Vurn. Sunday, October 23. Eve, 1306 N. Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $15. Visit breadandbuttershows.com.
