South Florida Grindcore Supergroup 440 Debuts at Fox's Sherron Inn October 15

440's Angelo Santa Lucia is part of a vast legacy of brutality.
Someone needs to sit down and finally sketch out the ultimate South Florida punk rock family tree. Because, we're willing to say at any given moment in the past, say, 10 years of Miami punk and hardcore, each sub-scene (Friday night mohawk, oogle, hardcore boy, hardcore boi, etc.) has had 10 to 15 people behind 100 bands.

Now we're not complaining. Because over and over again in different pairings pursuing different styles, the classics never go out of style. And 440 is the latest installment of a South Florida legacy of brutality dating back to the early 2000s when an underage punk populace (that hadn't yet figured out how to sneak into Churchill's) began throwing house parties in the middle of Kendall and warehouse shows in Allappattah.

From the monstrous trolls that brought you Consular, Mehkago N.T., Hellmass and more, 440 condenses the rage and searing sonic acerbity of the entire history of metallic hardcore into barely-a-minute blasts that sound like being inside of a burning building.

The ensemble -- featuring Angelo Santa Lucia on vocals, Berny Linares on guitar, Ronald Garcia on second guitar, Andres Torres on bass, and Chris Fiallo on drums -- recently crashed a Gainesville house show, an afterparty for a show featuring West Coast powerviolence legends Despise You and Florida's own legendary stoner-metal heroes Floor. But 440's upcoming performance at Fox's Sherron Inn will mark the band's formal debut.

The 440 ethos is embodied by 28-second blasts like "G.H.F.U." -- short, fast, loud, brutish, nasty, hateful, existential, grim, bleak, harsh, and so on.

As for why everything associated with his band is so pissed, Santa Lucia (whose vocals recall a Minotaur vomiting axes) explained, "It's an easy way to write lyrics."

440 with Slashpine, Devalued, and Supermutant. Fox's Sherron Inn, 6030 S. Dixie Hwy., South Miami. The show starts at 11 p.m. and cover costs $5. Call 305-666-2230.
