Vagabond Owner Carmel Ophir Rumored to Be Opening Barfly, New Club in Old Bar Space

Bar dies. Will Barfly take over?
It's been a pretty good week for all those downtown cool kids who've spent the last four months stone sober and cloaked in black, mourning the death of Bar, the OHWOW-owned hipster hangout that closed in July.

Over the weekend, a group of Bar's ex-employees opened a new party spot called Mamushka's in Wynwood. Like its predecessor, the joint boasts no cover, PBRs, and strict laws against bottle service.

And now there's a rumor that the old Bar space at 28 NE 14th Street is getting a new tenant, reportedly named Barfly, the latest nightlife project by the building's owner and Vagabond proprietor Carmel Ophir.

Several times in the last few days, we've spoken with Ophir by phone and text message, seeking details about the planned venue. When is Barfly opening? What's the concept? Will it be a live music venue? Or a low-key boozing place? And finally: Is the name a reference to Charles Bukowski's 1987 cinematic classic starring Miami native Mickey Rourke?

Unfortunately, Ophir isn't talking. And when pressed to confirm a project in progress, he's played coy.

"I can neither confirm nor deny it," he says.

when i say cursed, i mean it coming from a customer's perspective than anything else. i came to miami when the spot was a dwindling pizza joint and have no say about the quality of the food b/c i never ate there. i absolutely adored both ps14 and Bar for the crowd and friendly staff, not so much for the less than sanitary restrooms. the rotating installations were amazing. having said that, it seems that no endeavor there has had an extended running time, only short spurts of success hindered by bad management and shady business practices.

that spot is cursed. i say let it die now that we have mamushka's across the way.

@Anon, how is it cursed? It had a great run as a sandwich and pizza joint...Then as PS14 for a few years.Bar barely lasted a year and was drivin to the ground through shitty management and running illegally without a liqour license.

All your facts are wrong, beginning with only opened a year. Had more to do with the lease because they were ready to continuing operating once they had a lease. The bar was busier than it ever was.

I don't know anything about the lease, but I do know about the liquor licnese as I work for the City. State of FL DABT shut them down for operating without a liq. Period. There are your facts.
