You grew up listening to WVUM. The station number ran through your head as you lay it down to sleep. Every once in awhile, you'd call in and ask for a Sonic Youth song, just because you could and it felt so good.

Nowadays, college radio has changed. But WVUM has managed to remain a go-to station. Last year, it won MTV's Woodie Award and it's majestic music was appreciated nationwide.

Now three of station's DJs are joining musical minds to get a good Thursday-night soul/darkwave/ambient/punk thing going with Virginia Slims at Kill Your Idol. The party revolves around the idea of "Genre Fuck!" according to DJs Kev, Uchi, and Jona. Domestic drafts cost $3 and shots are $2. We had the three WVUM-ers send us a five song sampling of what we can expect this Thursday.

As Mercenarias' "Panico"
"All-girl riottt punk pre-Bratmobile from Brazil causing panico on the streets of São Paulo," DJ Kev tells Crossfade. "I found this seven-inch at Radioactive Records last Record Store Day!"

Tash Willmore's "Glorify War"
"Spacey electro stuff straight out of Sweden. Internet musician Tash Willmore is a Facebook friend of mine. But I can't tell you a lick about her aside from the synth swells she puts in my brain on a daily basis."

Ojubeha.jpg

Ojubeha's "Shirley"
This is Iranian tuneage from the '60s. And DJ Jona says, "The track satisfies my love for psychedelia and mod rock, but with a distinctively un-American groove to twist it."

BornRuffians.jpg

Born Ruffians' "What to Say" (Boys Like Us Rmx)
"Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend/Discovery fame appropriately reworks a favorite indie track of mine.  The simplicity of the original is maintained, albeit with more electro minded loops and snare strikes."

Bl/\ck Cieling's "Like a Prayer (re-witched)"
"Interesting re-work of Madonna's "Like a Prayer" with a scraper hi-hat and paper snare similar to that of Gucci Mane. It gives a feeling of lacy gloves, impending doom, and crispy Polo tees."

Virginia Slims with DJs Kev, Uchi, and Jona. Thursday, October 12. Kill Your Idol, 222 Espanola Way, Miami Beach. The party starts at 11 p.m. Call 305-534-1009.
