This Month's Best Musical Movie Options in Miami

Shake your Bacon with Footloose.
Last month, a remake of one of America's most cherished musical films was released. Of course, we're talking about Footloose, the movie about one young man's struggle with authorities to express his overwhelming desire to dance!

The remake is now screening all over the country. And aside from a few impressively acrobatic dance moves, it will likely suck. They may have Andie MacDowell and Dennis Quaid. But Footloose just isn't any good without the Bacon.

Sure, you can go watch this new, Bacon-free Footloose in the Grove to satisfy a movie music kick. But why not venture beyond the megaplex? From Wynwood's O Cinema to Miami Beach Cinematheque to the Miami Science Museum, there's an awesome music-related movie screening near you.

Beastie Boys Light Show
You ever get stoned and think, Damn, dude. Do they still screen laser light shows at the Miami Science Museum? And then, Are they still showing Dark Side of the Moon? Well, we're happy to report that laser light is going strong at the museum, and the lineup of musically enhanced, trippy visuals now includes the Beastie Boys. That's right! Feel old!

The museum is asking that people send in photos of their favorite "Beastie" look to aoliva@Miamisci.org. Take your cue from Elijah Wood in the "Make Some Noise" video. The show starts November 4 at 11 p.m. Tickets cost $8, but parking's free.

Serge Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life
Gainsbourg was a sultry man. Not a handsome man, but a man who banged plenty of hot women. Go watch a biopic, A Heroic Life, about this froggy pop icon's years singing and swinging. The film is screening at both Bill Cosford Cinema and Miami Beach Cinamatheque this month. His daughter Charlotte will also be appearing in Von Trier's Melancholia at MBC.

Bollywood in Wynwood
Sure, Miami-Dade County's Indian population may be comparable to the Florida panther. But their Hindi dance-tastic storytelling has so permeated US culture that we're doing it all Bollywood here in Miami.

Put on your best sari and most sincerely dramatic face, and get ready to jam out with bhangara music and dancing, inexpensive but tasty Indian chow, free henna tattoos, and the SoFLA premiere of the Sundance hit The Bengali Detective at O Cinema. Go Bollywood in Wynwood this Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30.

Cinema Sounds IX
Also over at O Cinema, Roofless Records and Sweat Records will be hosting Cinema Sounds IX, a visual and audio extravaganza. Bands play a live score to a scene from one of their fave films.

This ninth edition will feature the artistic and musical visions of Holly Hunt, Mothersky, Luma Junger, Devalued, and Ballscarf. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and music starts at 10:30 p.m. on November 23.

Mozart's Sister
Wouldn't it totally suck if your brother was a supergenius and you had a vagina, so no one cared whether you were any good at making music? Meet Mozart's Sister. This movie tells the tale of one talented lady who found herself in exactly that kind of predicament. Her younger brother got all the recognition while she had to crossdress just to play the violin. Tonight at 6:35 p.m. is your last chance to catch this film at the Little Havana gem, Tower Theater.
