Social Creep at the Scumbag Party: Beings and Discosoma's Listening Party at Lester's

No local band could better encapsulate Neil Young's doom-y axiom that "It's better to burn out/than to fade away" than defunct trio Beings, who took the SoFla scene by storm, toured with Torche, released one of Crossfade's favorite records of 2010, and then announced their final show seemingly out of nowhere.

Similarly, no band could better relate to the following description of John Huges protagonist Ferris Bueller as offered by the secretary of the villainous Edward R. Rooney: "The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, dickheads -- they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude."

The punks, the indie rockers, the weirdos -- everybody loved Beings. And Discosoma Records is giving the masses one last dance with a posthumous seven-inch single to be released this Friday at Lester's in Wynwood.

The Social Creep EP is the sixth installment of Discosoma's singles series. In addition to a previous Beings seven-inch, the label has produced records by South Florida pop and rock bands like ANR, Guy Harvey, Plains, and Lil Daggers. Usually hand-packaged, each release is limited to 100, featuring art designed by the band.

For the latest release, Discosoma curator (and half of Coral Morphologic), Jared McKay, is particularly excited about the glow-in-the-dark covers screened by Chuck Loose at Iron Forge Press.

In fact, it was the glow-in-the-dark factor that contributed to some delay in the record's production: McKay explains that the songs were recorded with Torche bassist Jonathan Nuñez back in 2010, and the initial idea for a final single came shortly after the band's farewell show at Bardot.

Nevertheless, the record is finally done and if "Modern Crush" is any indication, it'll be a strong final statement of the band's signature post-punk stomp.

Beings' Social Creep EP listening party, presented by Discosoma Records. Friday, December 9. Lester's, 2519 NW Second Ave., Wynwood. Group sampling of the new single commences at 9 p.m. and will last until midnight. There's no cover. Call 305-456-1784 or visit lestersmiami.com.
