Ultra Music Festival 2012's Ten Most Exciting Acts

Ready to Kraftwerk it?
Coachella's lineup got announced on Monday. And personally, we were underwhelmed. But it got us thinking how excited we are for Ultra Music Festival 2012.

Sure, Deadmau5 may think the number of headliner acts on the bill is horrible. But we have to disagree with you, Zimmerman. We haven't been this excited about an Ultra lineup in a long time.

And while only Phase 1 acts have been announced, we can't possibly see the lineup getting any better. Unless a certain French duo in robot helmets are added. (And, yes, Joel, contrary to what you said in your video, they've played music festivals before including the short-lived Bang! and Coachella.)

So here it is, the ten acts we can't fucking wait to see blow up Bayfront Park.

10. Katy B
Bear with us here. We know she's a bit too electro-pop for a lot of EDM fans' taste. But Ultra has a good record of having pop accessible acts grace its stage. (Well, Black Eyed Peas aside -- nvr4get!) Little Boots blew us away at Ultra 2010, and we expect Katy B to do the same this year. Her single, "Katy on a Mission," is the perfect balance of pop-meets-dance.

9. The Knocks
This duo's artist bio claims they "are taking a stand and reclaiming good music for all." While that may be over reaching, the Knocks harken back to a time when wobbling was something you did while walking around drunk. Their 2010 breakthrough, "Make It Better," was Peter Bjorn and John meets New York City nu-disco. In other words, their sound is clean, crisp, and sexy, which seems to be the most punk rock thing a dance act can do these days.

Should it be surprising that this comment feed is flooded with a bunch of wankoff losers?  This article is just Jose's opinion that doesn't make it any more right or wrong than yours.  If you would take the time to comprehend the article, he clearly states that these are the acts HE is most excited to see. No where does he force feed that you need to have these as your top ten opinion.  If you don't like these ten, make your own article and stop whining like a fucking woman.  This article got me re-energized on Ultra.  Thanks Jose.

Excellent analysis!  And as underwhelmed as I am as well about the Coachella lineup, Goldenvoice landed AMON TOBIN.  Seriously THE BEST audiovisual show experience in YEARS.  If Ultra added AT Isam I would sell my Brochella ticket to avoid all the ddm that is all over the Sahara this year.  Wait... and Madeon, Mazzy Star, Breakbot, and Modeselektor.  :D

JA! looks like a lot of people are disappointed for just a list...Anyway i agree on the Top 2 acts of Jose's list and maybe metronomy other than that Ultra really does SUCK.. and i think if you compare them coachella is maybe better than Ultra but still kinda sucks as well.

As long as PVD isn't headlining it's all a step in the right direction, but let me guess (I haven't seen lineup yet).  1. Paul Van Dyke 2. Tiesto 3. Moby 4. Deadmaus 5. David Guetta?

I jest of course - glad to see other than the above happening again (and again) - Bravo to landing Kraftwerk, and SUBTRKT is kickass...

I think this is technically the year Broken Beat is dethroning 4/4 monotony, yes?

Crap list.
Crap list.

This article is straight up shit...it should of been named top 10 worst acts of ultra..i love ultra and have gone many years in a row...but honestly this is the shittiest line up ever..

they have awesome acts but last years line up was WAY better...the fuck is kraftwork?? maybe in the 80's but cmon this is 2011...electro has changed..

Hipster this and that...w.e you old fuckers have a hard time evolving and advancing...times change..music changes..this list is garbage.

Agree with everything you've said about SBTRKT, different level compared to what has been labeled in the US as "dub-step".

I have sen both Kraftwerk and Daft Punk live and they both have their mertis. Daft Punk create a party where as Kraftwerk create an atmospher. Very differnet sounds and not really worth comparing.

I'm a Brit by the way coming over the Ultra for the first time and looking forward to it but please stop calling it EDM, much appreciated! :-)

Half of the list makes me wonder if the author has ever even been to Ultra before. And the other half tells me he clearly doesn't know chit about half the artists on the Ultra lineup!

y u no make sense?
y u no make sense?

How can you say you are underwhelmed with Coachella's lineup when nearly 50% of this "most exciting acts" list is playing at coachella? That is what I call a contradiction, and it makes you look pretty stupid brosef..

FizzleFry
FizzleFry

You are underwhelmed by coachella's lineup? It is one of the strongest lineups I've ever seen for a music festival. It has a little bit of everything, and AMAZING bits of everything at that. Ultra is just commercial DJ's with 4 or 5 big, great names. Nothing but electronic music. Ultra can honestly suck my dick because Coachella makes Ultra look like a child

You guys spend too much energy telling me to "shut the fuck up." Oh, the youth of America.

borring. Wakarusa, Bisco and Starscape are better than ultra. It's on a black of pavement. I go to a music festival to experience camping out, not walking on concrete all day. Coachella is better than ultra

BLIND TO YOU HATERS!
BLIND TO YOU HATERS!

More haters of course! Even the writer is a hater! Talking smack about Coachella?!?! Seriously, what's wrong with Coachella? I thought we were supposed to support and uplift one another. I think both events are great, but this guy totally just made me lose respect for Ultra. Of course someone has to throw in the ignorant 'brostep' comment as well! Who cares about genre's?!?!?! Push the limits, play what you want, and especially don't give a crap about what haters think! First off, until you can create tunes or become as well known and RESPECTED as Knife Party, Pendulum, or any other "brostpper", no one has the right to talk smack! Second, Knife Party doesn't even claim to be dubstep! They specifically make an effort to say that they are "Seizure Music/Death Electro/Derpstep." I'm finished with the haters! Peace

'If you really want to understand how vastly inferior the American version is compared to its British counterpart, just check out SBTRKT' - Couldn't have said it better myself!

But missing a trick not mentioning Jamie Jones etc - they will lay it down!

I'm sorry but this whole article pained me so much. Don't even talk about Daft Punk you ignorant shit-talking hypeman. Not only did you discredit half the artists you mentioned by some two faced compliment or comment such as "by no means are we a fan of justice's sophomore... prog-rock album on crack" or something similar. Who the fuck are you speaking for? Not to mention half of the artists you mentioned are on Coachella's lineup. The idea of being underwhelmed by The Black Keys, Radiohead, Snoop & FUCKING DR DRE? Thats a joke. Not to mention the other acts on the lineup. You've got camo and krooked, one of the fastest rising names in drum n bass, dubstep, drumstep, electro, etc. and you failed to even mention them. and back off the internet music memes. We have heard the term brostep before, shut the fuck up.

HeavySigh

Underwhlemed? Coachella's line- up is fucking amazing!! You guys seem a bit iffy about some of the artists, although there are SOME good ones. But I'd rather give my money to Coachella. And btw, since when the heck was Knife Party considered dubstep? They are electro-house.

No Jamie Jones, Art Department, Sven Vaeth?

What's exciting about acts like Knife Party that merge the shittiest aspects of brostep and house to make a giant turd?

lmfao u r real wrong bro ultra is packed out the ass, this writer has a very odd taste in who he se's as the ten most exciting acts, ya its all electronic music but the people who are going to be there makes coachella comparable to day glow, tiesto carl cox skirllex afrojack pretty lights dirty south a trak dada life porter robinson michael woods nicky romero and thats only day 1 then you got avicii fatboy slim laidback luke flux pavillion borgore doctor p hardwell datsik zeds dead 12th planet skream+benga zedd cedric gervais, o ya still another day guetta ARMIN kaskade bassnectar fedde le grande knife party steve aoki ferry corsten gareth emery sander van doorn sbtrkt big gigantic and this is all only in the first announcement besides the fact that i probably dont know of the other people on this list who are probably sick as well if you see that as 5 names then u are truly mistaken but on another note snoop and dre thats awesome, snoop was at zoo he was awesome

you my friend are wrong to compare Coachella with Ultra. both festivals have a diff approach to who they book. ultra goes ONLY for artist that use at least some kind of eletronic influence in their acts/music. as you stated coachella goes for every genre/variety. for any hardcore edm lover who just wants to see edm acts it is obvious Ultra makes Coachella look like the child in that perspective.
