Miami's Mansion Nightclub Stops DJ Dennis Ferrer's Set for Not Being "Commercial Enough"

DennisFerrerMansionMiami.jpg
See also "Dennis Ferrer's Final Word on Getting Kicked Off Mansion Miami's Stage for Not Being 'Commercial Enough.'"

Mansion has always catered to a very mainstream crowd with very commercial taste in music.

That's no secret. When the club isn't booking Top 40 hip-hop stars, it's only going after the most commercial names in EDM, like Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, and Afrojack.

But this past weekend, the South Beach nightclub also showed how far it'll go to maintain those commercial musical standards, allegedly kicking headliner Dennis Ferrer off the decks mid-set for not playing "commercial enough."

UPDATE DJ Shadow kicked off the decks at Mansion Miami, just like Dennis Ferrer.

Though the Opium Group is unavailable for comment about the incident, Dennis Ferrer tweeted about it on Sunday, writing, "Haha @mansion_miami made me get off the decks!! said I don't play commercial enough!! WTF!!!!!"

DennisFerrer-Twitter.jpg

And predictably there's been a major backlash at Mansion from fans of Ferrer and people who seem to be generally fed up with the way this and other clubs dictate the quality of music in Miami.

So what's the story, Mansion? Surely you must have known what kind of DJ you were booking when you put Dennis Ferrer on the bill and committed to paying him a sizable chunk of change for his time.

Dennis Ferrer's Mansion Incident

Dennis Ferrer on Mansion Incident: "Sad to See People Force-Fed a Misrepresentation of EDM"

Mansion on Dennis Ferrer Incident: "We Had to Make a Call When His Set Cleared the Venue"

Ironically, Ferrer is a fairly commercial house DJ himself, with chart-topping hits like 2010's "Hey Hey" under his belt. Apparently, though, Mansion and its patrons aren't happy unless they're getting a full night's worth of David Guetta and LMFAO on repeat.

House? Underground? Hahhaha, wondering when techno, minimal techno, techhouse and Innervision style deephouse (i.e. Henrik Schwarz) breaks through in the States. House  is currently being destroyed here in the Netherlands by mainly techhouse and in lesser extent techno and minimal techno. Even the big commercial clubs here are switching to tech orientated styles.

As a DJ my self I would never be told what to play! if you book me then you know what I play, remember it's the Djs job to set the VIBE !!!

hey...when u have a packed club and if the crowd isnt responding and complaining about the music......the DJ has to take the hit! I dont blame the club if they were responding to complaints from their very own clientele!

You play what the crowd likes, not what you (the DJ) likes.  At the end of the day, a DJ is just a human CD changer working for someone else.

Mansion should have known better than to have booked Dennis Ferrer in the first place and expect him to play cheese pop commercial house music.  Im glad Dennis stuck to his genre of house music and I hope that more and more people realize that in SOBE there are little to NO REAL UNDER GROUND HOUSE VENUES.  Everything has been commercialized.

The crowd giving the gas face to stuff they don't like isn't a new thing.  That argument has been going on for  what..like decades at this point?

Having said that, all I gotta say is: Wow, look at where we've come to.  Late night and afterhours places used to be about the end point of someone's ego. Yeah you could pull money out of it (ahem..house dealers) but overall the nightclub 'industry' wasn't really in tune with what people thought of as industry: Relentless pursuit of profit.  Guess that's gone.

I'm just glad I was going out all the time when it was a little less 'mainstream', if you want to call it that.

And on a music-head level, from someone who's been listening to 'electronic' dance music in most of its forms for over 20 years...most of the shit today is either for kids that can't dance (Dubstep) or so commercial that its better to use as mingling music...not, you know, dancing music.  Again, full disclosure, that's the music-head-takes-this-too-seriously-sometimes part of me speaking.  I won't necessarily hate on people, no matter what the stripe, going out to have a good time.

Whatever..sorry for the long winded wankery.

So many Europeans go to miami during the WMC and think that the week represents the music and parties that go on there all the time. They come back raving about the great parties they had at this or that club etc etc. It's all false, Miami wouldn't know EDM if it came up and kicked it's ass but they do know that the House tourists are coming and they are ready to take your $'s. Miami Does not have a House Scene. WMC should move and put an end to that misconception. I like what Dennis said about being ready to "educate" the room. People who have lived house music will understand.

Most of you idiots don't even know out pod what genre House Music originated from....Like everything to the simple minded it's all about "me vs you" "commercial vs underground".....Get a clue sheep, it all started from the same genre of music......You sheep hate on this illusionary concept of "commercial" why? What makes your house music more "underground" than mine? The lack of rhythm? the lack of swing?.......Stop being such sheep

Ok guy's. Let's be honest. Most Music directors don't know who there hiring. They just go by what someone else tells them, or go off of the big tracks the DJ has produced or remixed. UNDERSTAND!!! THIS!! Dennis had a Slew of major tunes, and remixes, that catapulted him into the mainstream market. Once this happened all of the BIG Commercial clubs are calling him, and PAYING him to play. SO!!! instead of the clubs knowing who they book. Dennis should turn down the money, and tell them that he's DEEP & SOULFUL and will NOT play there cheesy club for 10 to 15K.

Comment from Mansion about this situation (when I asked what happened):

"Dennis did not get kicked off, especially for Top 40, lets get that straight. He quit and he calls progressive house commercial music. He was DJing Beatport Top 100 Deep House tracks himself, so that's pretty commercial if you want to go by... what commercial means. He quit after he didn't get a response from the crowd... few fans came for him, after half the club seemed to want to leave the room... he suggested he should get off. Pretty nice way to get a lot of press the next day by saying Mansion kicked you off. Hey Hey... good for him except for the fact he is calling Miami musically unsophisticated and commercial... to get some press."

Miami music scene is as pathetic as South Beach in general. They ruined the whole WMC thing, I went last year and vowed never to go back.  Keep playing commercial and hip hop and watch SoBe go down in blaze like every other nightclub that does it.  My 5 steps for a dying nightclub:1. House/Techno2. Latin3. Hip Hop4. Stabbing and/or shooting5. ClosedLooks like south beach is following this program as well.My advice to real house/techno/dance music fans is skip WMC and SoBe and plan your trip to Detroit in May for the real deal (not to mention saving yourself about $2,000).

To CandyKid20 - people go to Mansion because it is a world renown club. Not to be seen or beacuse it is the cool place to be as you so put it.

They go to drink, dance and party. To most people who the DJ playing is has the same importance as the who the bouncer is or who the guy who freshens up the urinal cakes is.Get over yourself ! Your posts are so emo i can almost see the black mascara tearing up as you type.

I'm siding with the club on this one. Enough is enough. People come to be entertained, not put to sleep. There's a reason House music is being championed by 45 year old graying guys with homoerotic tendencies. The real world has moved on to hiphop. Good luck losers, you're going to need it.

I'm glad they kicked this fucking house nigger out. He's a piece of shit. There's nothing "artistic" about house "music," in fact the whole thing is a bloody oxymoron. It's not music at all, it's a bunch of self-entitled assholes replaying other people's productions. These losers should choke on a bouquet of fat dicks.

Good for Mansion - i am sick of dull 'soulfull' house music that just drones on repetitively until the entire crowd passes out in a fit of bass induced narcolepsy.

These idiot 'house dj's' need to realize that they are not playing for their 3 friends in a church basement. Clubs need to make money and give people what they want. Not experimental garbage that sounds like a pair of house cats in heat intercut with an MLK speech.

Dennis Ferrer and his ilk need to take a long look in the mirror and realize they are dinosaurs right before the meteor hit. Their dwindling 'fans' will not sustain them and no serious club will pay for their self-indulgeant crap that passes for house music.

It is one thing to kick a DJ off for playing poorly, but it is another thing altogether to KNOWINGLY book a DJ and then pull him off during his set for playing the kind of music he was assumably hired for. Not only is it embarrassing to the DJ to let the management pull him off in front of the entire club, but it is damaging to the club as well, essentially showing everyone that they don't know what they are doing.

I'm not even going to get into why clubs should try to educate their listeners..

Oh boy Tubbs, you're one of those that I'm referring to! Assholes like you go to the club for the WRONG REASON.  People like me who APPRECIATE THE MUSIC and ARE EDUCATED ABOUT IT go to drink, dance and hear the music of the DJ we paid to see.  To me, the bouncer, bartender or doorman aren't shit.  Fuckfaces like you are the "most people" you refer to who have fucking clue what this music or this scene is about and are subsequently ruining the beauty of it.  I have no clue how what I can said can be constructed as "EMO"...lol...your ignorance is clear! I don't claim to be "elite" or better than anyone else...but I stand proud on the fact that I'm not a hipster wannabe who goes to the club with no idea of who's playing.  I know what I like and what I don't like and you bet your ass I'm not showing up if I know I won't like the music being played.  Someone like you, on the other hand, is just looking to get shitfaced and find a girl to take home for the night.  Therein lies the difference between a true music lover and someone who is "there to be seen"...

The Prog God
The Prog God

The so-called Progressive House that is being played nowadays is nowhere near the Progressive House played by the likes of Sasha, John Digweed, Nick Warren et al. It's Not progressive it's actual regressive. Dennis Ferrer is probably more Progressive then anything the likes of Guetta, Afrojack, Chuckie etc have produced over the last few years.

Stop it now. And, stop calling it EDM ffs!

Poor CandyKid - a dissapearing breed of music 'purists' who claim to know music better than everyone else and yet the crappy house muzak they like gets less and less listeners every year. A fad that has run its course. Only aging arthritic house fans trying to fill a void in their life by showing how 'different' they are and how much they know better than everyone else.

At the end of the day your DJ's are getting the boot while music me and the rest of the planet enjoys continues to thrive. Keep fighting the good fight from mom's basement CandyKid !

Maybe your favorite house DJ's can find a street fair or a synagogue's unused basement for a set or two..doubt it though even those places give priority to more important people like hot dog vendors and AA meetings!

I would be offended if I understood even one word you said Giorg. Why should I study history to listen to music? Is it a club or a PhD thesis?

Normal people just want to have fun. House heads like yourself got to make a big production out of it. Clearly something is missing in your life.

PS: when you switch to ALL CAPS mid sentence does that signify a rise in your blood pressure? You should see a doctor about that.

Tubbs

Clearly my 'standards' are mainstream and what 99.9% of the population enjoys. More and more clubs like Mansion are booting out no-talent 'house muzak' DJ's so the majority of people aren't subjected to the whims of a few tone deaf house fanatics.

If its all about the love of music - set up a DJ booth on a street corner and entertain the common man. Put out a little hat and collect some shiny quarters.

The irony in your statement is that this incident has caused Dennis Ferrer to get more bookings. You can always turn a negative into a positive.

Tubbs is a loser.  It's crowd following no personality clones like him that keep music from progressing and instead allows the music industry to provide 1D personalities like his with a monotonous backdrop to continue looking for his next hook up.  Luckily people in the music industry are rarely like him or we'd all still be listening to rock from the 60s.

The no talent people are squarely in your court. Hence why you go ONLY TO dance and have a good time to music and contribute in no way to the scene or the development of music. I'd call that no talent.

Candykid20
Candykid20

Where in my posts have I ever said I only listen to house music? I'm talking about all electronic music.  Clearly you don't know how to read (or spell for that matter ---> "MUZAK"), as my post CLEARLY says I don't claim to be elite or better than anyone else.

Opinions are like assholes; everyone's got one, and apparently you have a huge asshole full of shit you like to spew.  You take pride in the fact that you're "mainstream" and like "99.9% of the population".  I'm pretty damn happy I can say I don't fall into that 99.9% of douchebags like yourself.

You can continue debating my posts all day TUBBS but this will be my last comment, as I have neither the time nor the patience to debate a jerk sitting in front of a computer screen who thinks HE knows all about the club scene and electronic music.

P.S. Don't let the screen name fool you; just because it has the word "kid" in it says nothing about where I live, my age or social status.  I am an adult who OWNS my own home and don't suck off anyone ("mom's basement").

Toodles!

Norm Johnson
Norm Johnson

In all reality, your comment makes no sense Tubbs...these no-talent house muzak djs created the music you listen to whether it's underground or commercial.  They have a hell of a lot more talent then the people using the medium simply for profit.
