Ten Reasons to Not Hate Skrillex

8. Skrillex Can Almost Single-Handedly Revive Careers
We're looking at Korn, specifically. Those who remember Jonathan Davis and company may not see this as a good thing. But when the nu-metal giants wanted to reappear and look relevant, they tapped Skrillex and went dubstep. Sure, they've worked with other producers, like Datsik. But it was the Skrillex brand that snagged the attention of kids who were still in elementary school (or younger) when Korn reached its peak in the late '90s.

7. He's Actually Been Into the Dance Music Scene for Years
Though he got famous in a rock band, Moore grew up attending punk shows and underground dance music parties in his native California. And while Skrillex was his first production project to break out big, the ex-screamo kid had been releasing electronic stuff for years, either under his given name or various aliases like Twipz.

"Oh, and he won 3 grammys" is not a reason to not hate anyone. The list of people we all hate who have won awards from self important, industry big wig morons goes on practically for ever. Otherwise though, this is a great article.

I gave up when you called From First to Last "screamo."

Then I decided to keep reading, and read:

6. The Skrillex Sound Doesn't Suck Like Other Dance Music

Seriously? C'mon, man. I don't give a damn how easy it is to relate to a musician, I want it to sound good, and interesting, and not like someone just hitting random buttons. His sound is incredibly derivative, and the fact that he, and others, consider his brand of music to be "Dubstep" is insulting to everyone that has ever come out of Croydon.

BTW what would have been the appropriate genre tag for FFTL... Sure, it's not like... Hot Cross or Pg. 99 or something but that's an easily recognized tag for that generation of bands which many people can recognize. Again, thanks for reading!

Arielle Castillo

Damn repeating the word "recognized" too many times, but anyways. Yes, I know what "real screamo" is because... unlike a lot of people commenting on this article or even the kids into "skramz," I was actually around for it.

To clarify, I didn't write that subhead as such. The point of that particular bullet point is that if anything, he at least sounds different from the Guetta ripoffs currently all over American radio. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment though.

You're Ten Reasons to Not Hate Skrillex DEBUNKED: 10) No genre is better than another. They are simply different. 9) Since when does dancing have to be 'cool'? Be yourself, man. 8) Lil Wayne can also revive careers, but he's still trash. 7) Only with today's music has it become acceptable for someone who hasn't been "in the music scene" to be a musician. 6) "The Skrillex Sound Doesn't Suck Like Other Dance Music"; So other dance music sucks now? Now, you're just being a typical douche... 5) "OWSLA" signs people. Labels do typically do just that. 4) This entry is just Butt-Kissing/Someone's opinion. 3) Oh yeah, he won awards. Accolades should bring forth more accolades, amirite? 2) More Butt-Kissing AND he's relatable... as in, he's human (OMG) 1) "He's got people talking about electronic music again" You mean because he's mainstream and that's what people do - talk about mainstream music. Fuckers.

and he's a faggot for getting peole to mosh pit at raves. REALLY?! those little punk asses can't even score a girl on xtc and instead hit each other. thanks sonny moore. first to last sucked too

Hey, just to clarify, that subhead on number six isn't what I originally wrote. My intention was that he brings a different perspective to other COMMERCIAL dance music on the radio which, frankly, sounds like stuff that was around a long time ago. Obviously, I do not think that dance music sucks because I have been involved in the scene since the late '90s.

If you click around on my past backlog of articles here you'll see plenty of coverage of all styles of electronic music, underground, commercial, and whatever else. That said, I have no reason to kiss anyone's butt -- and anyone who knows my personal tastes knows I kept them out of this story -- and this story was meant to play devil's advocate against a number of the most common reasons people give for hating on Skrillex.

You're right, number four is a matter of opinion; I like that track.

In any event, I appreciate that you did read the whole story and take the time to give a point-by-point rebuttal, so thanks.

As a person i don't dislike him its the music that i don't enjoy, why would anyone hate someone they don't know personally?

Arielle Castillo
Arielle Castillo

Indirectly, that's kind of my point. Leaving personal taste out of it -- which I did in this story, except for in #4, because I do like that track! -- he's accomplished a fair bit that's hard to argue with. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.

The only thing I dislike about Skrillex is the fact that his music sounds like a live pig being run through a table saw. Oh, and that hair....

Ten good points I can't disagree with and feel that most rational—and levelheaded—people would agree. I always point out, during conversations on Skrillex—which happen more often than anybody would like—that people like Skrillex are needed (and will always appear) to turn the tide and start popularity shifts within any sort of medium (electronic music, in this case). The thesis meets its antithesis and create the synthesis of change.
