Mykki Blanco, Genderqueer Rapper, Gets Down at The Vagabond for WMC 2012
Think about that for a second: a supernatural creature from space, wielding protective powers and harmonious vocal chords. It's an oddly appropriate description of this Harlem-based genderqueer rapper/poet/performance artist.
Luckily, The Vagabond and Sweat Records will be hosting a peek into the world of Mykki Blanco the Cosmic Angel for Winter Music Conference tonight.
For those of us who missed Mykki's performance at Art Basel, this time she'll be accompanied by a slew of other beautiful weirdos, including Krisp, Chalk, Never Yawn, as well as Ultrademon and Zombelle, two of the alleged innovators of Seapunk (#SEAPUNK).
Completely elated about the show and a little shocked that so few of our friends had heard about it, we emailed Mykki to get a little information about her.
"I've always had an obsession with writing," she says. "My grandmother once gave me four brand-new notebooks on the first day of Hannukah. I'll never forget how excited I was ... I started rapping because I write poetry."
"I was [also] a child actor," she adds. "From a very young age, I loved performing in front of people."
In a recent documentary video on Mykki, performance becomes entangled with her daily life as she raps on the train, spits verses on a street corner in her Harlem neighborhood, draws stares from people in the street simply because she's genderqueer, and then shocks them with her rhyming skills.
"It is interesting because, biologically, I am not transgender," she says. "I do not take hormones that alter my body. I am a transvestite, I suppose, because I have gone weeks, sometimes months, dressing and living as the opposite sex, sleeping with men as a woman, being referred to as a she. I feel two-spirited. I feel both sexes inhabit my character."
Post-Miami, on March 30, Mykki will be embarking on a West Coast tour. "I have a record coming out with OHWOW called Mykki Blanco + The Mutant Angels, and I have my mixtape, Mykki Blanco: Cosmic Angel, out on UNO Records," she says. "Look out for more videos and projects. I'm ready to take off!"
