Andy Griffith Dead at 86, a Musical Tribute: Five Songs That Whistle

Television icon Andy Griffith is dead.

The 86-year-old actor who played The Andy Griffith Show's Sheriff Andy Taylor died at his North Carolina home earlier today, triggering an outpouring of online tributes.

"His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations and shaped my life," tweeted Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son on The Andy Griffith Show. "I'm forever grateful."

Even though Griffith made his name as an actor, his passion for music was no mystery.

Griffith wanted to be an opera singer, according to People magazine. But he turned to acting while attending college. Moreover, the whistling theme to The Andy Griffith Show is one of the most recognizable songs of all time.

As a tribute, here are five songs that whistle.

Ying Yang Twins' "Whistle While You Twurk"
There's something comical about a woman whistling while she makes that ass clap, no?

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros' "Home"
It's one of the most infectious indie tunes of all time. But Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero's "Home" also holds the distinction of being one of the most covered songs on YouTube. Don't believe us? Search it.

Andy brought small-town humor and life into the homes of every American through their television screens.  He’ll be missed after his long and full career of entertainment which still fills many households like my own family’s.  I created a portrait of Andy and Don Knotts for my Cult of Personality series a few years back, which depicted entertainers who influenced my life in one capacity or another.  I shared work of art today on my artist’s blog at  Feel free to drop by and share your own memories of growing up with Mayberry.
