Best Coast's Guide to Local Eats Across America

A growing band's got to eat unless it wants to worry its mother sick. Fortunately, as Best Coast wiggles its way towards Grand Central on July 10, the duo is eating all sorts of strange stuff and telling you about it.
We normally hear from Best Coast's silent half, Bobb Bruno, about as often as frontwoman Bethany Cosentino hears from Snacks the Cat. But in this, the first of several conversations with the band's cheerful sonic overlord, Bobb puts down his hot dog with cream cheese long enough to give you a guide to strange local delicacies.
"This will actually be my first time in Miami," Bobb tells us. "We played once in Fort Lauderdale, but that's the closest I've been. If I could get a nice bistec empanizado and some other good Cuban food, I'd be really happy. There are a couple of Cuban places in L.A. But I'm sure in Miami, they'll be a thousand times better."
It's always Seattle Dogs when we're in Seattle. That's one of my favorite things: a red hot with cream cheese on it.
At first, I was like, "What?" But then I tried it and oh, man. Now every time I have one, I think, "Why am I not doing this at home?"
In Oakland, it's a common thing to have home fries with sour cream. That's how I eat them now, everywhere.
I would never have thought of it if I hadn't tried it there first. I went to three different breakfast spots served it there so I guess it's an Oakland thing.
There's a place called Grumpy's in Minneapolis owned by Tom Hazelmyer, who also runs Amphetamine Reptile Records. They serve a hamburger that has bacon and a peanut butter sauce, and it's amazing.
That's something I'd never try at home because I would screw it up royally. They've got the best Tater Tots I've ever had in my life.
I haven't been before ... But somewhere, they have this Lumberjack Breakfast with an eating contest based around it. There are these huge pancakes and you have to eat three of them. There's also a reindeer sausage and one other thing, some eggs or a bunch of homefries.
I've seen people competing, but I don't think I'd do so well. I could finish like one of these pancakes but I would have had the reindeer sausage first.
I do like vegetarian food, too. Whenever we're in Chicago, we go to this place called The Chicago Diner. And that's all vegetarian.
We usually end up there at least one time because Beth likes it so much.
I love any place that has BBQ. At SXSW, we were part of a BBQ competition. We weren't cooking. But different BBQ places represented different bands and we were paired with Franklin BBQ.
They made their meal based on what I was into, which turned out to be a bunch of sauces with Bushmills in them. That was pretty awesome.
So that's Bobb Bruno's weird eating guide. Bring a satchel of mofungo to the show for him, if you want. He'll try just about anything...except lil' swimmy guys:
"I don't eat anything from the ocean. I'm not into seafood at all. It just doesn't taste good to me. Being half-Chinese, I've probably tried every sea creature. Shark fin soup, of everything I've had, is the most enjoyable because it tastes like chicken. I think oysters and clams are some of the worst things I've ever eaten. Especially clams. My dad was Italian and he would make red sauce with clams in it, and you couldn't leave the table until you finished everything. It would take me like ten hours."
