Japan's D-Clone Bring the F#$% to Churchill's Pub on October 4

He's dressed in head-to-toe black, covered in studs with two bullet belts, a foot-long blue fan mohawk, and green paint smeared across his face like some kind of ceremonial warpaint. Then this punk leans into the microphone. And mustering an exaggerated sneer as spittle flies with each syllable, he dramatically howls a broken-English introduction.

"We crossed the Pacific," he pauses, with emphasis, "to bring the fuck!"

This was the start of an actual set by a Japanese band that we caught in the early 2000s at acclaimed NYC DIY hotspot, ABC No Rio. And it perfectly encapsulated hardcore from the Land of the Rising Sun.

For one reason (a long history of cultural repression) or another (The Bomb), Japan's take on hardcore comes with more belligerent gusto and greater intra-punk influence-sourcing than the rest of the international community of raw punx combined. And few bands represent Japanese HC's fanboyish embrace of any and all waves of fast-hard-and-loud as well as the almighty D-Clone.

It all starts with the name, a knowing half-parody of and half-tribute to the legions of musicians who've somehow created an entire genre -- "D-beat" -- out of the white noise-saturated punk-metal and galloping rhythm section perfected by '80s British crust rockers Discharge.

And then there's D-Clone's sound, executed with the reverent expertise of true believers taking part in a tradition they love.

Of course, Florida's own premier D-beat misfits, Mauser, will be making an appearance. And of course, this is another excellently curated evening brought to you by the extreme music fiends over at Speedfreek Presents.

D-Clone. With Zatsuon, Mauser, Radiation, Shitstorm, and Bastard Deceiver. Thursday, October 4. Churchill's Pub, 5501 NE Second Ave., Miami. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the cover costs $10. Call 305-757-1807 or visit churchillspub.com.
