Ten Reasons EDM Is the Wimpiest Youth Culture Movement Ever

Busted Buying Likes.jpg

Buying Likes
But at least Deadmau5's rise to fame was genuine. There's a new trend where DJs, record labels, blogs, and promotional companies are going around actually paying companies in Mexico and wherever else to help them make friends on the Internet. Sometimes, cheating can be hard, but this is just wimpy because it's so totally obvious. Sorry, there's no way you're most popular in Venezuela if you're based in a college town. You're a wimp, and you know it.

Sync Button.jpg

Sync Button
Of course, technology is a big part of the scene. Technology is actually really awesome, but EDM-ers find a way to mess all that up too. DJing used to be hard, it used to be for people who learned something. Now, any bro with a laptop can do it. The controversial "sync button" takes beat-matching, the most basic of DJ talents, out of the equation. Inherently, this isn't so wimpy, because it's supposed to free you up to do more intricate and impressive things. But most people are wimpy and use it as a crutch to deliver unenergetic, non-experimental sets. Shame on you.

i don't understand why people don't see mexico as an edm hot spot.  asot 600 was in mexico city and tiesto just played there last night too. avicii has played in mexico, and deadmau5 has been playing there since '08.  the only person who's been buying fans is dj bl3nd.

The author sounds very bitter. He picks silly and arbitrary things to pick on (Vick's vapor rub, for instance). That's a classic bully tactic.  He even clings to the schoolyard insult "wimp".

The EDM culture certainly has its flaws. For instance, the line between chemical spiritualism and chemical addiction is fuzzy at best. An alarming percentage of people cross that line.

However, the EDM generation are sincere in their love for art, for dance, for creative expression, and for one another. It's not fake. It's not jaded. It's not judgmental. It's not sarcastic. The sincerity is real. Living and speaking sincerely is something the author hasn't begun to comprehend.

The author is probably one of those wanna be white gangsters. Seriously, pick out some more stereotypes about a certain movement. You can find negative aspects about any culture movement if you look hard enough. Seriously whats wrong about a culture of peace and love? Really i mean come on, you are using the word wimpy for christ sakes. Ooooooooooo that is so offensive. Do something more productive than bitching and ranting about some music scene you hate. You sound exactly like Deadmau5. Therefor that makes you even "wimpier" than the rest of us.

edm back when it started was very different from what it is now. back then it really was about PLUR. now it about doing drugs and honestly just hoping the half naked girls with freak on you. back when it all started EDM was about feeling love and giving love. you were able to walk into an event and felt as if everyone was already your friends and family. nobody cared what you did. now it's about these hipster ass kids running around fist pumping and eating magic beans calling themselves "ravers" i understand your concern there... its honestly has done a total 180. yes the EDM communty is a bunch of  fist pumping, half naked, neon colored dressed drugged up people but just remember this.. edm definitely one of the most "feel good" genres out there. fine you are right.. we don't have guns, break dancing, mosh pits, gold chains, or cool jackets but what we do have in common is the music we listen to.. to me thats all that really matters. we are all in one place enjoying the music and feeling good. call us whimpy, call us soft, call us a bunch of unmanly bros fist pumping.. but at least we get to do it without caring if we are tough or not. why do you need to act all tough anyway? why do guys act all tough? who cares if you are tough and can smash a can on your head. AND JUST REMEMBER THIS WE HAVE HALF NAKED GIRLS RUNNING AROUND LIKE THEY DONT CARE. i dont think rap or country or punk does that.

@househead91 you fail as an individual if you think that edm is the only scene with half naked chicks running around lol. But I do agree with the rest of your statement (:

Sorry we don't wear trashy leather jackets and scummy outfits to be badass. We explore opposite ends of the spectrum to brig fun and enjoyment, comfort and energy! Go fuck yourself for even assuming half of this shit. As for bro step and such, I think it just got a little out of hand. It's music, and music is music, however there happens to be a large population that is attracted to it. Even if that population is "bros" so bark up a different tree and speak upon a group or movement that you actually know.

Most young EDM producers teach themselves EVERYTHING... They don't go learn production lessons from their high school teachers because no highschool teacher has a clue. Neither do our parents. Yeah there's a few commuter colleges but ain't nobody got time for that! Up and coming producers sit at their desks for hours and hours learning everything there is to know about production and DJing and teach themselves. (EDC DISCOVERY PROJECT IS PERFECT FOR WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT)

And as for the culture. We are different. We are starting a new era. A beautiful careless era that may not be as "tough" as you wish. But maybe that's because we don't have to be. We're bringing back summer of love" And there's nothing you so called "tough" guys can do about it.

I'd like to point out that  Jazz hands are open not fists. Big room builds haven't been cool since the mid nineties because they lead to no where and it's monotonous. As for the pacifier you will wish those kids have one when someone bites off their tongue. The buying fans sync buttons and cheating were never part of the program. That's all new. This is not a movement it's a fad.

If this shit is so easy and not music, then why don't you do it and make a ton of money? Instead of writing for, "wimpy" websites. DJing is much different then creating music and I would love to see you try to create a EDM song. All these other assholes which talk about picking up a real instrument really should do their research. The majority of EDM producers know music theory and how to play various instruments. This blog is seriously stupid and quite honestly pointless. EDM is popular and will continue to be and you can sit around with your thumb up your ass complaining about how it sucks and it is not real music all you want, it won't change a thing.

discogurlie
discogurlie

@fuckoff6969696 The dance music that's out now is very simple not very good watered down copies of material from the past. Most people can't go make a ton of money doing music because they don't hire musicians. If you are under the impression that any of those people are there because they have skills you are dead wrong.

TTFTW
TTFTW

We're all entitled to our opinions, but on one page you ask why every song has to sound like Jesus' resurrection, and on your last page you criticize producers for not experimenting enough? That makes very little sense. You also criticize tweens wearing furry boots? Why are you telling them to grow up? They're 14. People look like idiots with inhalers shoved up their noses? Possibly, but do you think people who paid good money to experience their favorite music in their favorite way have even a modicum of interest in what we think they look like? I totally understand you think other generations went harder or did it right, but I also have a feeling you'll be criticizing every generation from now until you realize you should stop blogging. Then again, criticism is an easy way for an amateur blogger to get a paycheck, so in the true sense of PLUR, I'm not mad at ya.  Do your thing. I'll respect your hustle. Next time, though, understand that we're just out here doing us, and are glad people like you choose to stay at home when we're raving.

EDMElectroLover

I HATE THIS GUY, he knows nothing about music. Theres thousands of variations of electronic music and EDM music, each one with distinct different sounds. You have to really trully feel the music and vibrations flowing through your body internally and it affects your physical and especially your mental state, causing you to react differently than any other type of genre in music. The "vibes" you get from listening to electronic music make you happy and want to dance and share the love with everyone, everyones positive energy flows throughout everyone else and everyone feels it, it just feels good. It's extremely hard to explain if you don't have a love for music or you don't have a musical ear, I love ALL kinds of music but there is no other music except for electronic music or EDM that affects me so greatly to the point where it changes my life and my emotions and I just feel amazing and want to dance and have a good time with everyone around me, spreading the love. I feel as if it almost tells stories, and I can imagine like the heavens gates opening up to me on the break downs leading into the drop and then explosions of crazy good feelings when the drop comes. I can feel my self orgasmically vibrating good feelings througout my entire body when I listen to it, I guess its just unexplainable to someone who doeesnt know music or feel music or have a musical hear.

So why is 'EDM', or just 'Dance music' to everyone else. (the 'electronic' bit is pretty obvious) being classed as a new Youth culture? its been around since the 70s/80s and started with disco. Seems now its hit big in the US that its classed as a new phenomenon??, about 20 years after it was/still is huge in the UK & Europe?? Its great that it has such a following in the US but everything has its down sides, the idiot who wrote this article should be sacked and go back to chugging 'brewski's' with his frat boy friends and the 3 other people at the slipknot reunion concert, go and get drunk and fight with them haha, what at tit

The author of the article is an idiot. Allow me...

1. Nobody fist pumps because its cool. You fist pump because you're dancing to music. After the drop and subsequent fist pumping, people pretty much go back to whatever other weird dance moves they were rockin' out with. It's all part of the expression.

2. Never heard of dubstep (brostep)? There's nothing lovely dubby (no pun intended) about hard hitting and grinding bass. You're also forgetting about trap and a lot of electrohouse. If you want some gangsta' shit listen to trap. If you want some dubstep bass with more melody, listen to electrohouse.

3. If you're listening to EDM for the vocals, you're doing it wrong. It's Electronic DANCE Music. The vocals are usually nothing more than an extra layer of melody for people to sing to instead of hum to.

4. Good job picking some of the ugliest girls you could find for that picture. Some girls can really pull off the fury clothes. But even if that's not your thing, what could be more awesome than the fact that the unspoken motto for clothes at an EDM show seems to be "less is more."

5. The pacifier is as old as raving itself. This says nothing about our generation. Regardless, it's just all part of the fun of dressing up for some people. I don't see what's wrong with that.

6. People don't wear the masks to look like a ninja. They wear them for the same reason they put on anything else when attending a rave, they can. Also, kandi can be an amazing work of art. If you can't understand that, then you've obviously never tried to make any.

7. I feel the same connection with my fellows at a show whether or not I'm rolling and I know many others would agree. Not everyone at a show in rolling. Some people just don't want to try it and others realize that you can't abuse MDMA. You shouldn't need molly to enjoy a show.

8. Deadmau5 is a hero of the scene? Please tell me that was a joke. Also, he doesn't make trance.

9. You say Deadmau5's "rise to fame was genuine," yet it says right there on the picture that Deadmau5 is buying likes. How dumb are you?

10. There is much more to DJing than beat matching, but who cares because DJ's are a dying breed anyway. Most shows nowadays are all about the producer. We're there for the music, not for critiquing a DJ's ability.

That's all I have to say. There's the door, now leave.

I've been going to EDM events for 10 years now and I can tell you that the scene sucks and is very lame now.. The music is soul less. The bass lines are no longer funky and fun, they are now formulaic and boring. What ever happened to Breakbeats? Have Djs just completely forgotten about that genre? The DJs are really the ones to blame here since they NEVER have any respect for the older generation's perspective, they just want to do their own thing and yes I agree they have turned the entire movement into a joke. The fist pumping and DJ worship is a big part of the problem, I remember when no one even knew or cared about the DJ as long as he was playing good music.

brozly

this article is ridiculous. i'll take its claims point by point

Fist Pumping - This is in no way inherent in rave/EDM culture. Some people may like to do it, but it's a relativelyrecent phenomenon and rave/EDM long preceded it. Even when I have seen people doing it, it's not a widespread thing. The author seems to have selective perception regarding this, since I don't think it happens that much. Further, why the hell is Pauly D supposed to represent EDM culture?

Big-Room Builds - So now he's saying that EDM = progressive house? I myself am not at all into progressive house. Guess what? The majority of EDM is not progressive house. There's techno, drum and bass, various other kinds of house, trance(in all its flavors), dubstep (both midrange heavy and deep). So yeah, you can hate progressive house and still love EDM. If you want a solid example of an event you can go to with very appealing non-prog house artists, consider this year's Escape from Wonderland, Insomniac's Halloween event. It's gonna have huge techno acts: Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Dubfire, as well as some great trance acts: Gabriel and Dresden, Sander Van Doorn, and some great dnb acts: High Contrast, Hype, Noisia.Cheesy vocals – Yes, this kind of EDM is out there. Yes, it is unfortunately pretty popular. I personally dislike Kaskade since Dynasty. But going back to what I said in the previous paragraph, there’s SO much more than that around, and plenty of people come out to events to see other kinds of acts. So the author would do well in acknowledging that not all EDM suffers from this unfortunate vacuity.

Furry Boots – The author very slyly chose the ugliest picture of furry boots he could find. In reality, most girls who wear such boots do not look like this. Usually, such boots are of a solid color. Out of context, such fashion admittedly isn’t totally sensical, but much of any kind of culture is hard to understand from the outside. The author sounds like a bitter outsider.

Pacifiers and Inhalers

Pacifiers – Most events have banned them. You hardly see this anymore, even at underground events.

Inhalers – Yes, they have a heavy drug connotation. I won’t argue that. But they do not cause any damage when used in moderation.

Druggie Love Declarations – Guess what? People often go to raves with friends they have some feelings for. Yes, drugs hyperbolize their emotions and maybe cause some new ones to arise with strangers, but I do not see what is so wrong with breaking down communication barriers and enjoying a night of fluid social interactions. When you go to concerts it’s largely an individualistic event. The beauty in a good rave(not all EDM events/raves) is a sense of openness and interactivity with strangers. It’s like a whole new world.

Crybaby Deadmau5 – The author contradictions himself blatantly here. He says, criticizing Deadmau5, “You don’t speak for the movement.” If this is true, why is the author using Deadmau5 to speak for the movement? Baffling

Buying likes – If this is true, it applies to a small portion of EDM artists. And I don’t see how this really affects the EDM movement. Many music scenes are propelled by huge corporations(Clear Channel) which pump the music through radio nationwide. That's not buying likes, but it's buying exposure. Which is basically what buying likes is intended to do.

Sync Button – Most DJs also happen to be producers. Look at some of the most famous DJ’s out there: Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Deadmau5, Andy C, Richie Hawtin, Above and Beyond, etc. These guys are DJs, yes, but they also make strings of albums of EDM. Some of them even own record labels. A huge part of going to see Deadmau5 isn't exactly hearing his songs. Any moron with virtual DJ can string together some deadmau5 songs. What's appealing about seeing him is experiencing his sound from the source alongside amazing visuals and thousands of fans. And there’s absolutely no evidence that any DJs use the sync button. You might see a random no-name college DJ using the sync button, but show me the slightest shred of proof that big name DJs use it. The author is engaging in baseless speculation.

it sucks the writer of this article only knows about the shallow and temporary fads of EDM. a lot of it is really soulful, takes a lot of hard work, and takes place in trendy clubs where people aren't fist pumping in neon shirts - I don't like that part either, but i go for the music when it's  good!
