Do you ever miss Burdines?

Us too. Especially shopping for husky jeans with our abuelita while her sweet, reassuring Cuban voice reminds us que husky no significa gordo, just healthy. But like grandma, Burdines passed away in the mid-'00s.

Once the gold standard of Florida ready-to-wear clothes, fine linens, miscellaneous home goods, and small appliances, the Sunshine State institution became Burdines-Macy's in 2004 and then simply Macy's a year later. Yes, "The Florida Store" died and returned as a generic department store.

In Miami, however, one former Burdines became Avenue D Jazz and Blues Lounge, an equally nostalgic club in downtown Miami. And on Friday, January 11, the lounge will host roots jazz man Victor Bastidas and De Paises Project.

Billed as "a collective of musicians from around the world," the group has been blending intercontinental sounds for eight years.

In September 2012, Bastidas returned to his native Bogotá, Colombia, with De Paises Project to coheadline Jazz al Parque, the capital city's annual three-day music festival.

Confidencial Colombia, the country's first digital periodical, called De Paises Project's performance "one of the best representations of Latin American folklore via remarkable fusion."

We agree. And so does our dearly departed abuelita.

Victor Bastidas and De Paises Project. Friday, January 11. Avenue D Jazz and Blues Lounge, 8 S. Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 9 p.m. and admission costs $10. Call 305-860-6960 or visit avenuedjazz.com.
