Jamaica is one of the world's greatest contributors to DJ culture.

The original mobile sound systems found in the trenches of Kingston in the 1960s packed megawatt speaker stacks in the back of moving trucks, parked them at various party locations, and battled other crews doing the same to see who was loudest and had more new records.

Eventually, this concept was adapted to vinyl and became referred to as dancehall music.

"Johnny Osbourne is like the original dancehall artist," says Jesse Serwer of Miami-based reggae and dancehall website Largeup.com and also an occasional Miami New Times contributor. "He was the first artist to take the idea of the soundclash and make a record that does the same thing."

According to Serwer, around 1979 or '80, Osbourne recorded "No Ice Cream Sound," a track putting down all DJ crews deemed soft.

To celebrate Winter Music Conference and Miami Music Week, Largeup, Osbourne, and the best of South Florida's Caribbean music community come together for a massive party at Blackbird Ordinary.

Jovi Rockwell, who wrote Snoop Lion's first single and is a frequent ¡Mayday! and Major Lazer collaborator, performs too. So does DJ Gravy of Rice & Peas in New York, Jasmine Solano of Electric Punanny, and the mighty Black Chiney, Scotch Bonnet, and Eccentrix Sound, to name a few.

There will be food, oceans of rum, and enough music to tell Ultra and all other systems whose sound is really boss.

It is Johnny Osbourne's.

Johnny Osbourne. Presented by Rice & Peas and LargeUp. Thursday, March 21. Blackbird Ordinary, 729 SW First Ave., Miami. RSVP via wintermusicmassive.eventbrite.com. Call 305-671-3307, or visit blackbirdordinary.com.
