KRS-One, Uncle Luke, Styles P: How Did the Stage Become Miami's Best Rap Club?

How did the Stage suddenly become the best rap club in downtown Miami?

Over the next month, this two-and-a-half-year-old Design District bunker that's built its rep on roots, rock, and reggae will serve as the staging place for classic-era shows by former LOX member Styles P, booty bass pioneer Uncle Luke, and the old-school's own professor, KRS-One -- not to mention a weed holiday hip-hop house party called the High Times Cypha 420 Smoke Fest.

Apparently, though, it all happened almost by accident.

"I think the Rakim show during Basel really opened our eyes to the need for hip-hop in Miami to have a quality home," says the club's booking manager Eric Garcia, referring to a massive December gig by the golden-age rapper so preternaturally skilled that he's also known as Rakim Allah, the Master, and the God Emcee.

Next, the Stage and team gambled on veteran hip-hop hustler Murs. Then the Wu-Tang Crew's Raekwon.

"The response has been organic and exciting," Garcia says. "Now we have people bringing great shows to us that we wouldn't have even considered a year or so ago."

Because right now, this Design District bunker is running the downtown game.
