Mykki Blanco's Dark, Surreal, Genderqueer Rap Banging Up Bardot Miami on April 11

Genderqueer rapper Mykki Blanco will bite the head off a harpy, steal that bitch's wings, and work 'em harder than any regular rap dame ever could.

That's because Blanco is no regular rap dame, and she certainly ain't no regular rap dude. She is hip-hop's new in-between, the great white hype, and it really doesn't matter what you call her, as long as you say it with respect.

And next Thursday, Blanco will demand respect as she bangs up Bardot with her dark, surreal opuses and reality-bending energy.

Blanco is based out of Brooklyn, part of a new wave of rappers who don't adhere to the usual macho-man approach of decades past. No topic is taboo, no look too extreme. The rebirth of cool wears a beautiful wig and rocks it well.

As Mykki told Crossfade last year: "Biologically, I am not transgender," she says. "I do not take hormones that alter my body. I am a transvestite, I suppose, because I have gone weeks, sometimes months, dressing and living as the opposite sex, sleeping with men as a woman, being referred to as a she. I feel two-spirited. I feel both sexes inhabit my character."

She's currently on a nation-wide tour, in support of the Cosmic Angel Illuminati Princess Mixtape, a 15-track adventure through stark, spacey rhythms and experimental flows almost sung more than spoken. It's sexy, whatever the sex may be, as she flirts with distinctions between male, female, gay, and straight. And beats from bad-asses including Brenmar and Flosstradamus ensure there's plenty of edge to rock a crowd.

Go discover Mykki's freaky delivery. Get turned on to the new ways. And come dressed to impress, because this is high-fashion ratchet shit.

Mykki Blanco. Thursday, April 11, at Bardot, 3456 N. Miami Ave., Miami. The show starts at 10 p.m., and tickets cost $15 to $20 plus fees via showclix.com. Ages 21 and up. Call 305-576-5570 or visit bardotmiami.com.
