Get caliente with Palo!

The infectious sound of los timbales and bongos fuse with the keyboard as sax and vocals crescendo. In a matter of seconds, a seductive melody reverberates through the room causing the party people to involuntarily and uncontrollably shake their asses. They have caught Palo! fever.

For the past decade, this Afro-Cuban funk band has been bringing el sonido caliente to the Magic City. The guys (and lady) of Palo!, however, are just getting started.

"We're looking [to book] outside of town. We've been to New York, Boston, Chicago, and learned that our music travels well with other people," said Steve Roitstein, founder and frontman of Palo!

But leave your "Lengua Larga" at home.

"It's not officially announced yet. Our immediate thing this summer is we're working on a new album. We have a lot of songs that we've written. It should be out in the fall."

As for the group's anniversary celebration, the frontman says, "We're gonna have a really big shindig for our tenth anniversary, where we can show our appreciation to everybody who has supported us over ten years."

Until then, you'll just have to watch Palo! and Roitstein unleash the fever on PAX's dance floor with their Afro-Cuban funk.

Palo! Friday, May 17. PAX, 337 SW Eighth St., Miami. The show starts at 10 p.m. and tickets cost $10 plus fees via ticketfly.com. Ages 21 and up. Call 305-640-5847 or visit paxmiami.com.
