It's a tough racket being a DJ in Miami. In a nightlife capital that moves to that uhntz-uhntz beat 24/7, there's bound to be a constant surplus of hungry wannabes fighting over gigs for their measly share of the limelight. Only genuine talent, hard work, and dedication set apart the pros. Take Miami clubland mainstay Jason Baez, known professionally as Baez. After patiently and diligently working his way up in the competitive local scene since the late 2000s, Baez has emerged as the go-to DJ for practically every promoter of underground house and techno nights in Miami. There are few DJ booths in town he hasn't graced, and he's opened for some of the biggest names in the game, including most recently Maceo Plex and Damian Lazarus at Mansion. There's also the matter of Baez's own Sub-Motus parties, which bring serious international bookings to Miami every month, and his budding work as a producer with releases on labels such as Wehppa and Deep Tech. In short, Baez has risen above the noise by being the hardest-working DJ in Miami, without ever compromising his commitment to pushing underground and cutting-edge dance music.

Some people didn't learn the "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" exercise. Baez is ruffling some feathers? He must be doing something right!

Hahaha what a stupid cunt. I go out and hear plenty of dj's that dj for free all the time. Some suck, some don't, has nothing to with money. I'm glad Baez has som ill-informed haters because more haters equals more money and more gigs. It's science

@karenaroncho I wrote this piece. I have known Jason Baez for going on 5 years -- the same stretch of time I have been covering Miami's electronic dance music scene and watched Jason grow from a humble beginner, to the DJ playing the most gigs in Miami's underground house and techno venues each week. I can assure you there were no bribes (monetary or sexual) involved in Miami New Times picking Baez as Best DJ of 2013. Besides, who are these "real DJs" Jason is keeping from getting paid gigs? It seems to me that a "real DJ" is one who does it for the love of music, not money. Instead of coming here and questioning Miami New Times, you should ask all the promoters who keep booking Jason why they do it, or better yet, ask the hundreds of locals who follow him why they do it.

@karenaroncho sounds like you have a bit of a chip on your shoulder, baez is a brilliant selector and knows his shit, if you are so bitter about someone elses success you should take a good look in the mirror

@karenaroncho I'm not really following you. And in any case, if you're going to make such scathing, libelous allegations about another person, then maybe you should have the guts to use your real name. Otherwise your credibility = zilch. Only trolls post anonymous comments.
