Stevie Wonder Boycotting Florida "Until Stand Your Ground Is Abolished"

Sorry, Miami. But if we ever want to see Stevie Wonder again, we have to start making some changes. It's time to get political.

You see, Stevie Wonder made a pledge and he signed, sealed, and delivered that promise right to our doorstep. Actually, he said it on stage in Quebec shortly after George Zimmerman was acquitted.

Stevie Wonder will never play Florida again (or any state that upholds a Stand Your Ground law) until that law is overturned.

"I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again," Wonder said Sunday while performing in Quebec City. "As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world."

Now, Stevie's decision may seem slapdash, since it seems lately a lot of what our Florida legislature does is completely out of touch with the needs and desires of its people, and it kind of feels like we're the ones who are being punished. But you know what? He's right. Only a motivated populace can make lasting change.

"The truth is that -- for those of you who've lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world -- we can't bring them back," he said. "What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That's what I know we can do."

What do you say, Florida? It's time to make a change.

Does Stevie also boycott Chicago and Detroit for black on black crime that occurs every day? No. He boycotts a state that has a white on black killing once since stand your ground.

How ever will the Hard Rock survive this boycott ?

The bad thing the ppl that are boycotting the law makers don't care to see anyway.

@Kenyon he believes in it and that's admirable. I'll say that Mr Wonder has always been a man who has the courage of his convictions. But boycotts like this do nothing but screw over the people who cared about seeing him and those who makes the laws he's boycotting don't care. Especially when they look at this case as a success. This has always been the problem with boycotts. The minority who attempts them more often than not wind up making more enemies or creating more apathy than successfully affecting change

Just echoing the fact that the trial wasn't about Stand Your Ground. Also, Pierre is right when he says that there is a difference between innocent and not guilty--not guilty being a legal judgment freeing a man from culpability of the charges brought against him. However, to imply that Zimmerman was not innocent is a weird claim. His actions were seen as defensive. It is explicitly a violent act when fearing for one's life, but the violence is defensive. So is he innocent? Depends. He exerted force. He killed a kid who attacked him. We have to learn to separate the legal arguments from the emotional rhetoric. Otherwise, we spread misinformation.

I see the hate people in Los Angeles decided an appropriate response to the verdict was to loot the closest WalMart.

I don't understand all the negativity. This man has decided to take a stand for something "he" believes in. Whether you agree with his reasons or not. I would hope that you can respect him for taking a stand and not just talk about it like many others. This is america.

When more celebrities start doing this, and more people boycott Florida, then the Floridians will see how tourist dollars help them to have no state income tax.

Manuel Grossy: George Zimmerman was acquitted as "NOT GUILTY". That is not - REPEAT NOT - the same as innocent. Was OJ Simpson innocent? And, guess what? The Martin family is entitled to pursue every legal option to get justice for their son. Personally, I hope the Zimmerman family never has a moment of peace, and has to rely on donations from the trailer park community college dropouts who watch Fox News.

How will he see if he crosses the Florida-Georgia line????

Manuel Grossy

It is truly a violation of the Constitution allow politics and politicians manipulate the judicial system of the form in which they have done in this trial. If Mr. Martin had been white or Hispanic Mr. Zimmerman had ever he set foot in court. The defense proved that for the law, Mr. Zimmerman is innocent, again will try to politicize and pressure the judicial system. They should be ashamed to use the death of a human being to advertise their own monetary interests. The only people who will benefit from this political circus are the news and that group of people who want to change this judgment for political interest no for Mr. Martin o for justice.

That's because it's easy to sit on your ass and sign a petition and talk a big talk about boycotting things rather than challenging an entire society's way of thinking about race and the justice system, let alone fixing it.

@Doug ChristyEh, could be Quiet Riot Take 2, much like how Miami took tangible losses after the NAACP led a boycott against Miami for shunning Nelson Mandela.

@Firip Onitsuka Perhaps you didn't listen to Juror B37's words, or the reason why Seminole County, FL is very much fixed in the Deep South despite being squarely between Orlando and Daytona Beach.

@Travis Kimmel You sure about that?  Juror B37 cited "Stand Your Ground".
