How 'bout some barbecue, ice-cold PBR, and old-school hits to see you through a weekend hangover?

That's the deal on Sundays at the Midtown Get Down at the Stage.

"The Get Down lets you know we're having a little bit of fun and it's not pretentious," says DJ Self Born, the man behind the party. "It's very inviting. You can just walk in."

And what you walk into is a backyard-style cookout with steaming stacks of grilled meat, classic tunes from DJs Self Born and Heron, and booze specials.

"[I've been doing] a Sunday-night party, Classic Sundays, for about six years. It's all old-school hip-hop, and from doing that, I wanted to start a day party because a lot of people can't go out on Sunday nights," Self Born explains.

"As I was trying to do this day party, Heron was my guy. We did a lot of the same things, and we wanted to give [people] an alternative to the Beach; we just hadn't hooked up yet. That's when the stars sort of aligned and we got together."

Ribs and steak may play a big role in the Get Down (in fact, "you can BYOM, bring your own meat, only if it's packaged," Self Born laughs), but the most important special ingredient is the music.

"You're gonna be getting down to professional-grade DJs. We'll be there spinning quality music. We'll have theme days, Motown music, females, and R&B," Self Born says.

"It's not just a jukebox of mainstream music where the same music you hear on the radio is what you hear here. You hear everything from Rihanna to Frank Sinatra. It's not your typical playlist."

"We've played everything," DJ Heron adds. "We cater to the crowd, to what they listen to, to stuff they haven't heard in a while. Every sound reminds you of something that happened and has place in your life."

Although the purpose of the Get Down is to have a hell of a good time, Self Born and Heron have an ulterior goal in mind.

"It's an open letter to businesses," says Self Born. "The goal is to have five to 10 separate grills of local restaurants or food trucks. [We want the people and businesses to] represent Midtown. That's the ultimate goal."

Heron agrees.

"It's about trying to unite businesses and make people aware of whats going on in the community, that there's positive things happening and people are trying to unite for a positive thing."
