EDM Is Sexist: Eight Reasons It Sucks to Be a Woman Who Raves

partywithsluts.jpg
Thanks for nothing.

As a self-respecting female with professional aspirations and a desire to be taken seriously as an individual, it's become increasingly difficult to identify with American electronic dance music culture without feeling kind of irresponsible.

Six or seven years ago, the playing field was pretty even. We went out to parties, we dressed as if David Bowie and Karen O had a baby, we got drunk on whiskey, we danced, and we were never embarrassed by our surroundings.

But things have changed. What started out as fun, rowdy party tricks have been fully incorporated into the scene as sexist expectations. That which was once ironic parody has become a parody of itself. We no longer look around the dance floor and see a utopia of acceptance.

Yes, this party is sexist. Here's why.

Bodies as Billboards
Sticker wars are one of the most enjoyable parts of the EDM game. It's exciting to be out in the world and find a sticker of a DJ-producer you enjoy, or a blog you read regularly, or even the sticker of a personal friend stuck onto a garbage can or a light pole or the side of a bar. It's like walking into an inside joke. But somewhere along the way, someone put a sticker on a woman's bare ass and had a million dollar idea. Suddenly, stickers as pasties became the latest thing every DJ needed on their FB profile. Now it's sadly more an expectation than a shocking sign of good times. We shouldn't have to remind every asshole we meet with a sticker not to put it on our tits without asking, but we do.

Face Down, Ass Up
Listen, Diplo. I'm glad you helped introduce the world to NOLA bounce, twerking, daggering and the like. You and Eric Wareheim definitely killed it with that "Pon De Floor" video. Shit is classic. But now that Miley has completely murdered the neo-swing art form and turned it into modern, misunderstood exploitative garbage, we need to make it stop. News flash: Strippers aren't role models. The idea that a woman has nothing but her sexuality to rely on as a money maker is disgusting, outdated, and depressing. When executed properly, twerking and daggering are impressive, but when you're submitting pictures of yourself half-naked upside down on things just because everyone else is doing it, you're officially an attention-depraved moron.

Such a great article about and it applies to the club scene in general. Why can't a girl get up and dance without a strange guy trying to dry hump her? really? It's ridiculous already. I'm so glad somebody wrote this because partying has gone from fun to dumb.

Such a great article about and it applies to the club scene in general. Why can't a girl get up and dance without a strange guy trying to dry hump her? really? It's ridiculous already. Not to mention the videos with little girls on drugs humping trees. I'm so glad somebody wrote this because partying has gone from fun to dumb.

There are many many scantily clad women at EDM shows who are  celebrating their sexuality and flaunting their assets with tiny outfits... That, I believe, is the main contributing factor to the outward appearance of female objectification at the shows....

Also, if you go to a Diplo show, there will be hordes of knuckle-draggers, in my experience. As far as crowds go, Dillon Francis and Diplo attract the lowest common denominator of EDM fans. If you want a generally more mature group to party with, try attending a concert held by Pretty Lights' music label....... or perhaps a solid drum n bass show.

so glad that none of this reflects my experience as a raver! i'm 39, been raving since 1992,  still going strong. i guess there's something to be said for partying with adults, and going to good parties (ie: not massives) with good music and a low douchebag quotient.

Dumbest article I've ever read about EDM (actually it probably comes second to your article about why you shouldn't sleep with a DJ). First of all, since when did twerking represent EDM and was only a part of EDM culture? Clearly you don't know anything about the scene. Second of all, EDM isn't sexist because some girls wear some nipple stickers and think they look good. I would never be caught dead in nip stickers and I've gone to plenty of festivals, thank you. Third, men are pretty much just as naked as girls at festivals. And since when was men grinding up against women exclusive to EDM? Ugh. Seriously, Kat, get a fucking clue.

No. Let me say it again. No. The very premise of this article is in itself, wrong. Sexism is to discriminate against a person or people because of their sex. In fact, EDM is the opposite is sexist because It is BEYOND accepting of individual sexual preference. EDM doesn't care if you're Male, Female, Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, transgender, monogamist, polygamist or asexual. In fact EDM couldn't care less about your sexuality, philosophy or politics as long as your dance and having a good time. All EDM cares about is dancing and having a good time. Period.

Give credit to our site, partywithsluts.com for the image of the beautiful asses. Which you'll note sells many both male and female clothes but never references gender in it's clothing. Being sexy and/or slutty may be morally wrong (in your eyes), but it doesn't mention FEMALE anywhere. How is something that says slut on it degrading to women? Especially if a guy is wearing it or a girl put it on by her own choice? This article is dumb and I want to punch it square in the face.

This seems more about the music industry in general and not EDM specifically. As a gay male, I must say that EDM is rather focused on topless guys grinding on each other and probably has more homosexual lyrics and undertones than any current genre. EDM is also one of the few genres where the producer is put up front and not the vocalists. (Name the producer on Miley Cyrus's last song. I bet you can't without Google) and I believe EDM is truly about the joy in music.

As for women being objectified in music videos, that's all Armada and Spinnin Records doing. That isn't the whole industry and there are plenty of female vocalists in EDM that are well respected and don't feel like they have to strip down to nothing to make a statement, unlike Miley Cyrus, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, etc.

My final statement is most EDM songs are about enjoying music and dancing... not about love and sex like the current Top 40.

The fact that all these guys said they want sluts at EDM events and no other girls prove this article right. She isn't talking about society, she's talking about the culture.Karina Tellez should read the comments above hers to learn it might be female expression to her, but it seems the majority views you as a slut. Do you but you may be defined as a slut.

lmfao at this article. Another fucking joke written by a feminist. Sluts go to EDM festivals get the fuck over it or don't' go. Men want sluts, not feminists at these events. Now go cry to your little mommy.

Half of the people who enjoy EDM actually go out and party to it and half of them are spermlings. Girls who want to be party accessories can do so at their leisure. Guys who wanna be party accessories can do the same. Those who don't want to be human accessories just enjoy the music/dancing and venue to express themselves. I read this shit last week and cringed because the writer is 100% boring / slut-shaming and chalking up years of societal/cultural rearing to lack of creativity and individuality. Actually all of those girls who wear next to nothing in their kandi shit are still unique human beings. The lack of creativity and individuality lies in how this society/culture uses sex to sell everywhere and then of course women are the first to get reprimanded for showing their bodies because they feel like it. All the situations where women have been harassed due to their choices of clothing are THE FAULT OF THE HARASSER goddamn it

What if those eight reasons were reversed? Would anyone say it's sexist? Just curious. Also, I love how she tells people to shut up about stopping slut shaming by telling women who they "truly are" lol

Kenia West if you dont want to be looked at like a sexual object, then youre probably better off not showing up to edm events practically naked, or revealing because then it's your own fault. Or better yet, stick to your kitchen

this entire article is so antithetical to feminism.  Its my body, i have the right to do what i want with it. If i choose to stand on my head and shake my ass then that is what I will do.

Then  female body is gorgeous.  So much respect to the girls who are comfortable in their own skin to wear close-to-nothing proudly.    The fact that men "Grope" half naked women is a problem with MEN not with us.

you must think girls who dress sexy deserve to be raped too.

Anthony Alfaro

Really? EDM hates women? EDM?! How about we deal with Hip Hop first and then we can talk! Also, Sexuality or "hypersexuality" is not antifeminist unless its being forced on the female. The expression of female sexuality is part of the feminist movement. WHO WROTE THIS SHIT?!

Shayla Walsh
Shayla Walsh

And if she was attempting to write about the political and social reasons for hyper sexualization and how that oppress women she missed the mark. Take a womens study class before you call yourself a feminist. Your article validates patriarchal views on women and gives men the "ok" to call women sluts. Need proof? Read the comments. MNT needs to fire this writer.

Sorry, but with due respect this article wreaks of a sensationalist blogger who had a rough night and got hit on by one too many guys.

1) Since you're not complaining about fans wearing t-shirts to support artists, it's safe to say you're problem isn't with the stickers, but the nudity. In that case I'd like to welcome you to South Florida, bc you're obviously not a native.

2) You completely trash girls for twerking and dancing in a sexually provocative manner (whilst simultaneously trashing the entire adult entertainment industry), does that mean that pole fitness classes are also a plague to society?

3) You must really be offended by nudity...Avoid Haulover and definitely stay away from Ocean Drive, your mind will just explode.

4) I'm sorry there was a creeper at the last festival you went to, but while you were tweeting about him 50 cool dudes walked by you.

5) If you don't want to get sprayed w/ champagne, don't stand in the damn front, what do you expect?

6) The essence of this question is equally as sexist as the bias you allege, as though women should somehow inherently be on that list without merit or accomplishment.

7) There are male and female sluts at rock shows, hip hop shows, and pretty much every gathering of people anywhere under the sun.

 8) Sorry, but regrettable pictures are not something unique to the EDM community, and it's irresponsible of you to alledge that it is.

You tout this proud feminism yet are quick to insult so many other people because their form of self expression doesn't match up with yours, and even worse, you're doing women a disservice by calling your own blatant sexism, "feminism."

cathleenie13
cathleenie13

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. "It saddens us to speak to women at music festivals and hear that they're constantly being grabbed and harassed by men because of the way they're dressed." This entire article goes against female freedoms. If we want to dress like this, we can. If men can go to raves shirtless, why not everyone? There's nothing wrong with half-naked bodies. REGARDLESS, men should understand to keep their hands to themselves. I've been groped, physically PICKED UP and carried, and been sexually harassed at festivals and concerts while wearing a tank top and shorts (which is modest for EDM). That's fucked up. It has nothing to do with the clothes. This whole article is just a way to try to make women ashamed of their bodies.

@silentj9 Wouldn't it make the writer sexist by associating the term "slut" with women and not men?

@Kristofer Jesus Castellar It's crap comments like this that shows feminism has to exist because of sexist pigs like yourself.

cathleenie13

@dannyseigel001 YES. Thank you. A woman who speaks about other women like this is NOT helping the feminist cause, but just making it harder for women (and men, to some extent) to be free.
