On Saturday, Mother Nature was no friend to the inaugural Friends of Nature Music & Arts Festival as an almost Biblical downpour forced the cancelation of all acts -- including headliner Matisyahu -- scheduled to go on stage after 7 p.m., by order of the fire department.

On Sunday, though, despite the weather being free and clear of storms, headliner Café Tacvba was missing in action too.

According to Friends of Nature's Facebook page: "FON FEST and representatives of Café Tacvba will work together to see if a rescheduled performance in an alternative venue may be possible in the near future, dependent on the band's previous commitments - but at this time no make-up date can as of yet be determined. Look for an updated announcement in the near future."

Though Friends of Nature blamed these aborted sets from Matisyahu, Café Tacvba, and a number of other bands on bad weather, it appears that poor organization and lackluster ticket sales also contributed to the festival's faltering debut.

In the run-up to opening day, as the Miami Herald reports, the City of Miami nixed the use of a side stage for local bands after it was deemed to be in breach of sound ordinances. Meanwhile, O Cinema's tent never even opened, because of missing gear that FON Fest apparently failed to provide as planned.

And acts, like Nortec Collective's Bosstich and Fussible as well as Miami's Suénalo, have told the Herald of FON Fest's inability to pay band fees. "They said they were not going to be able to pay us," Nortec's label rep says, "they didn't have the funds, the walk-up [ticket sales] were not what they were expecting, and we should not perform."

Nevertheless, come Sunday afternoon, a balmy ocean breeze refreshed shirtless hippies throwing Frisbees between signs that warned of crocodiles.

Scattered throughout the beautiful site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, there was a vast array of entertainments and diversions: the customary food trucks, a stage featuring electronic music, a man with a truck-sized contraption that stamped your dollar bills to read, "Not to be used for bribing politicians."

In the tent for stand-up comedy, the day's biggest laughs belonged to Forrest Shaw as he trashed the disorganization of the festival and worried about it being Veteran's Day tomorrow, joking that he'd have to sweat out another day to make sure their check cleared.

The frustration was understandable.

When you go to an event that describes itself as taking place rain or shine, it is assumed all advertised acts will perform no matter the weather, not simply that there will be no refunds even if the weather is too awful for the musical acts to perform.

By far the most disorganized event I have ever attended. Not only were those working for the festival extremely rude and ignorant on standard questions such as: where to locate water stations or VIP wristbands, but the simple fact that no liquids, yes you read that right, no liquids or bar-b-que were allowed seemed disingenuous at best. The VIP experience was a complete waste of money as we saw many without VIP credentials camping in VIP designated areas. In addition, promised handbags and other trinkets were also not delivered.

Most importantly their ability, or lack-thereof to provide enough watering stations throughout the festival was the proverbial last straw. The blatant agenda was to coerce the attendees into a false sense of benevolence with propagated tag-lines such as "ECO-friendly". Instead they used environmentally conscious terms to increase sales for the festival.

To add salt on the wound it is/was nearly impossible to contact anyone affiliated with the festival to get answers for pressing questions.

Do us all a favor and end the blatant highway robbery here and quit hiding under the assumption of a "do good festival" that is here to promote eco conscious rhetoric..

the FONfest facebook page's content continues to change by the hour.  notification of yesterday's cancelled acts came a mere 2 hours before the headliner was scheduled to take the stage, and is non-existent today.  Go ahead FONfest, censor your page just a bit more.  Clearly no one trusts your word anymore.  What a joke of an event.

seems to me all these "bands" and "comedians" just worry about their checks and that's it. Completely missed the point of the festival, of course the frustration its understandable but even the news times said it On Saturday, Mother Nature was no friend to the inaugural Friends of Nature Music & Arts Festival as an almost Biblical downpour forced the cancelation of all acts -- including headliner Matisyahu -- scheduled to go on stage after 7 p.m., by order of the fire department. Also the writers of this review should be more professional, on saturday people from this "newspaper" were asking people from the tents about where they were able to get some weed. I know this because i heard them and saw them wearing the press pass.
Get serious.

Excellent review; very fair. They need to get their act together if they want this to succeed again, and their milquetoast public excuse for not having cafe tacuba perform was downright laughable. I still had a great time though and thought this showed some of the best of Miami's community. Here's hoping they can get it right next year.

@UrViCe You are so right!!!! What a scam....this festival used Mother Nature's good name for promotion while there were NO recycle bins and their carbon foot print was not neutral. The generators were working overtime. And as you said, campers had their water confiscated?!?!?! Really?!?!? So they had to buy little plastic bottles of water from the festival vendors with no place to recycle....what a waste of a good movement! FON Festival....you are not welcome back!

@liveartpainter  You are a fucking idiot. The talent needs to be paid as promised in any festival. The "point of the festival" is to make money. Just because their marketing strategy appealed towards the hippie-vibe doesn't mean that they can go around breaking financial commitments to people who happen to make money playing music.

I don't know the festival's angle on the payouts or if it was ultimately handled, but it's douchbags like you that don't know what they are talking about here. You most likely agreed to do some "live art" there because no one will pay you too and you're pissed at the bands for tryin to get paid.

As far as the writers, they probably HAD to score some weed just to deal with the boredom of a washed out, poorly attended festival that they had to cover and possibly to deal with un-seeing whatever crap art you cranked out of your ass.

Thanks for comin.

@unclescotchy why are you so defensive? were you the one asking for weed? is not like the News Times is a real newspaper half of the paper is porn...plus its free and no one reads it. By the way i did get paid and im glad you lost money...Grow up instead of picking fights over the internet behind your monitor.

@liveartpainter @unclescotchy ...I'm not being defensive at all. Simply calling you out for calling out artists for wanting to get paid (even tho you claim you did. good for you). Judging from these other comments, the "point of the festival" was missed by the festival mostly.

I don't work for the New Times and I didn't lose any money, but nice of you to talk shit about a publication on their own page.

I'm not picking fights behind my "monitor". Just calling you an idiot for saying dumb shit.
