Young Ultra Attendee Dies After Saturday's Show

Adonis Peña Escoto apparently died Saturday night while attending Ultra.
UPDATE: Medical examiner report showed that Adonis Peña Escoto passed away due to "acute alpha-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone (alpha-PVP) toxicity." Alpha-PVP is a type of synthetic bath salt sometimes sold as "gravel."

A young Ultra attendee has died under mysterious circumstances.

Adonis Escoto, 21, passed away in a car parked near the music festival. He and his friends had been attending Ultra since Friday night. Late Saturday night, however, Escoto suddenly began to feel dizzy.

"We have no idea what happened," says aunt Rosa Escoto. "He didn't take drugs. We think maybe someone put something in his drink without him knowing."

News of the death first spread on social media. Friends and family members of Escoto -- an improv comedian who performed under the name Adonis Peña -- began posting photos of him Sunday saying "RIP Adonis 30/03/14."

Rosa Escoto says she first learned of her nephew's death when she received a call at 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Adonis started feeling sick Saturday night while at Ultra, she says. His friends, however, thought he had simply drunk too much, and they took him to their car to sober up. When they returned a couple hours later, Escoto was dead, according to his aunt.

A Miami Police spokesman said the department did not have any information on Escoto's death. A Miami Fire-Rescue official also said he had no knowledge of any deaths at Ultra, although a patient could have passed away after being transported to a hospital. Jackson Memorial Hospital did not return phone calls for comment. Neither did Ultra. We will update as soon as we hear from the music festival.

It's not inconceivable that Escoto died from accidentally drinking something laced with drugs. Last year a 23-year-old Ultra-goer went into a coma and nearly died after someone gave him water spiked with anti-freeze.

Another youth, 20-year-old New Jerseyan Anthony Cassano, did die from a drug overdose last year at Ultra.

There are few details available about Escoto's death. His older brother, Dionis Escoto Jr., confirmed that Adonis died while attending Ultra, but asked for media to respect his family's privacy.

"We're mourning his loss," he said. "If you want to leave us alone, that's cool. I don't want to talk about it right now."

Adonis Escoto's Facebook page reveals a young man who loved EDM. He "liked" several DJs and belonged to Facebook groups "ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL TICKETS," "REAL Parties/Events For The FLY & YOUNG," and something called "just about killed 088577."

I'd like to clear the air... This young man was a victim of someone else's vicious actions. I personally was at Aventura Hospital ER when he was brought in at 1:10 am on Sunday Morning. The Paramedics were doing compressions on him while he was wheeled into the ER. The Doctors and Staff took over and were diligently trying to revive the young man. But unfortunately he may have already passed away. It was said that he was already in a early stage of rigor and that his skin was bluish before he arrived at Aventura. I do question why did Fire Rescue bring him all the way up to Aventura when the event he attended was closer to JMH? I don't know if it would've made a difference, but it did cross my mind.

I feel very sad for the family and Pray that the will get through this...God Bless them..

Working within the confines of the Bayfront area, I dislike Ultra as much as the next person due to all the traffic headaches it brings -- especially when it is happening on a weekday -- as it impacts not just the residents of the area, but the workers trying to move around the heart of the city.  It is very frustrating to say the least, and perhaps if it were held in the suburbs where it does not inconvenience thousands, it would be more embraced.  I'm also not a fan of the trash left behind by the attendees, and which is picked up by the wind and swirled around, making our city look filthier.

That being said, drugs, drug abuse, alcohol, alcohol abuse, spiked drinks, vomiting, passing out, sexual advances, groping, etc., are everywhere where people are congregating and listening to music, whether it's Ultra, a lounge or a night club. Just because a death isn't reported does not mean it didn't happen and believe it or not, plenty of deaths go by unreported.

While people are responsible for themselves and what they put in their body, once water is laced with drugs or poisonous substances prior to purchase, it's no longer that person's fault.  The person is unaware that he is consuming something potentially lethal, when all he meant to do was hydrate.  Efforts should be made to find the people who are lacing drinks with anti-freeze, as that is attempted murder, though unfortunately, it's easier said than done.

My other point is, that even if you shut down this event, that won't stop accidents and deaths from occurring -- they will just occur elsewhere.  While we don't know what happened to this young man, my other point is, perhaps this was an accident where he had no clue what he had ingested, so don't put the blame on him without having proof that he brought this on to himself. Regardless of how it happened or who is to blame, he is dead and his family and friends are suffering in his absence.

They left him in a car? Once you left the festival there was no re-entry. So how did they leave him in a car during the festival?! And i am sorry but if he did take something, drunk too much, there were a lot of emts around to help those in need. Why leave an uncouscious friend in a back seat? :/ we should all ask for better friends because you never know what may happen.

ULRTA is a festival that breeds stupidity and ignorance. It's truly unfortunate that someone so young dies at an event that is purely to have fun. I wish Ultra was no longer here. It just makes an already stupid city more so.

Ok, so someone died. It was his time. ANY AND ALL implications that this death was connected to ULTRA will be extremely unhelpful and heartily opposed.

Dont want to say anything about the kid till they find the true cause. But it is not ultras fault as many say. This can happen anywhere and it does. Shame on the friends for not seeking some sort of help. Better to be safe than sorry. My condolences to the family. Ultra should remain right where it is...the heart of miami.

If it is drug related.... I get the feeling his family thinks he doesn't do drugs, or his friends slipped him one.

It's unfortunate when anyone dies. And it's always easy to point the finger. Those are horrible friends, period. But, it's not a valid reason to ban UMF. Things always go wrong at big concerts, festivals and shows. I am down to ban urban weekend, and so is every other business on Miami beach....

so far i havent seen anything that doesnt typically occur at large festivals, concerts or bars around the country. if miami kicks it out theyll just move to BFE somewhere else and whatever small town picks it up will reap hundreds of millions in profits and become a wealthy city overnight in a time of poor tax revenues.

So sad. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. No matter what happened, he is someone's son, brother, nephew, etc. I hope his memory is a blessing to them during the difficult days ahead.

Kyle Haines

Death is always sad. His friends sound very selfish for leaving him in the car even if they just thought it was alcohol poisoning (btw a car is a terrible place to leave someone in physical distress) to go continue partying. I believe them when they say he didnt take drugs because if they knew he did they would have to be sadistic to leave him alone if he was starting to OD. Lets put this in perspective though. Ultra didn't kill this person. Everyone is responsible for what they put in their bodies. People OD on Miami Beach every year from the regular nightlife. Even if you believe the festival killed this person that puts them in a tie with the police departments taser-happy cops. (Reefa) This should not be ammo for Sarnoffs crusade against UMF.

What an ignorant comment. Its easy to see nothing good comes out of your mouth. I think we should get rid of it.
