Anthony Bourdain Slams EDM: "Come Ye Lords and Princelings of Douchedom"

We are all quite aware that food celebrity, television host, prolific author, and hilarious asshole Anthony Bourdain is basically a rock 'n' roll guy.

On the tube, he can often be seen palling around with Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme, another funny, prickly professional shit-talker. And the theme song for his latest TV show, CNN's Parts Unknown, is a woozy rocker from Homme and ex-Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan.

But did you know that Bourdain is also a big fan of magic?

Also, he hates "electronic dance music."

For his most recent Parts Unknown episode, Tony visited Vegas, which, like Miami, is among the international flashpoints of global EDM madness.

And while dining out with magic-slash-comedy pro Penn Jillette, the topic of conversation turned to the battle for supremacy and ticket sales between Sin City's live acts (like, uh, magicians) and all these recent "electronic" invaders.

"These days, for better or worse, live acts, live performers are being squeezed out in favor of EDM, electronic dance music," Tony laments in voiceover. "It's a DJ's world.

"And where once," he mirthfully adds, "they used to say, 'Cocaine is God's way of saying you have too much money' -- now, maybe EDM is.

"There used to be a whole spectrum of entertainers who existed almost entirely in Vegas," Bourdain reminisces. "Danny Gans was huge here. Wayne Newton. They were gods.

"But what's the big money draw now?" he asks, incredulously. "This..."

Uhntz-uhntz, wah-wah, uhntz-uhntz, wah-wah, tiki-tiki-tiki-tiki.

Thus arrives Tony's high sarcastic assessment of the electronic dance music scene: "Come ye lords and princelings of douchedom!

"Hear my clarion call! Anointeth thyself with gel and heavenly body spray! Maketh the sign of the devil horns with thine hands!

"Let there be high-fiving and the hugging of many bros! For this is the kingdom and the power! Now frolic and maketh it to rain!"

Whoa. Haha. Ziiiiiiiiing, bro.

Let's hug.

Yes,Divine Playground at bayfront park 1993!! utah saints, meatbeat manifesto, rage against the machine, 808 State just to name a few. Ultra only brings 3 maybe 4 good acts each year. this year for example; MGMT, Cut/copy, MIA, empire of the sun. the rest cheap EDM.

house music is a USA product, Edm is a European hybrid without deodorant.

Actually Ultra started in 1999, and before Ultra came around it was WMC which started in 1985. thats when electronic music was underground. now is a mainstream atrocious thing, a corporate shit storm infested with bad music, distribution of cheap EDM. Its only about several types of electronic music, its about DJ logotypes. DJs are brands now days. and as someone mentioned bellow, EDM is a copy of EBM.

The douchebags are the frat bros that come to parties to just do drugs and molest girls. People that are fans of the music aren't.

Screw his opinion. And FYI, it's 2014. You don't need musical instruments to make music anymore, if you don't want to. Get over it. And Barbara, I beg to differ. There's some great music to "fuck" to, and some of the most beautiful, captivating melodies I've ever heard have come from EDM tracks

Bourdain is a douchebag. Tell him to STFU and eat his crappy food in silence.

EDM= no political content of message..... music that isn't great to fuck to or remember a moment in time..... Disco music with no dance.... people who can't live in the experience of the moment; since they are concentrating on holding their cell phones to view their experience while not really experiencing it.... Has no charity involved when buying tickets..... Carl Cox is the only ( present time ) one who understands the mix of music genre's; he's 50...... Only good ( current or new) sounds are the ones that the " producer" uses beats or bars from rock, soul, or funk already made by other musicians. Times have changed from the small venues ; when I saw Crystal Method, Prodigy , Chemical Brothers in the past century ..... Concerts charge big bucks; hundreds of thousands of people where a message can be delivered to better the consciousness of youth..... And doesn't .... That's a waste.

People think EDM is new! Started when I was in my 20's 2001??? First ultra fest around then. Was called techno drum and bass raves etc . I never liked it just constant paranoid noise thumping guess that's why drugs are used. Molly not new then it was rolls E Ecstasy .... However just because I can't stand it I dont insult those that do. World be boring if we all had the same likes.

Considering the whole "movement" is basically a sub genre of a sub genre. They took EDM from the sub genre of EBM (Electronic Body Music) which is big in Europe and is more band oriented. The DJs are talented and the artform is respectable but yes it's true the fans are all rude assholes. Mindless zombies raised in the high tech era. I don't know about Vegas but people in Miami are some of the laziest mindless people I ever seen. Not to mention the foreigners are incredibly rude, and will push and shove you out of the way. And people hate me so much for speaking English. We get all the low class tourists, so it's not just EDM heads it's everyone in Miami is a douche for the most part. So much beautiful weather and scenery, yet everyone is angry and miserable

And who likes Anthony Bourdain anyway. He charged $1500 a person for the privilege of being in a room with him during the South Beach Food festival.

ATB, Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz , Above and Beyond are the prime definition of musicians in this genre.. Also, the Chillstep sub genre has a nice selection of actual music. Check out MrSuicideSheep's youtube channels. He has 2. Here is an example of what it contains: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqtTxYOiLLY

"Let's hug" is the genre's anthem..which is one of more than a few reasons why it's caca total...unfortunate that Anthony Bourdain even had to chime in about the decline of vegas entertainment, which is in any case a bizarre notion that has apparently come to pass. And holy shit, to me, he convincingly bolsters his argument with nostalgic recourse to Wayne Newtown!

@Ronnie_M Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder.

Have you ever gotten deeply into any of the musical forms that make up the basis of modern music? Orchestral, jazz, or traditional ethnic music? If you educated yourself and became immersed in music, you would likely understand why people diss EDM as they do. Your perception would change and you would realize that the subtle complexity of much of the best jazz & orchestral music makes all pop music sound like the repetitious, formulaic drivel it is.

But go ahead, keep emoting from a position of utter ignorance. Snore.

Ronnie_M
Ronnie_M

@Dexter_G  Utter ignorance? Trust me, I'm well aware orchestral music is beautiful, and I understand and appreciate the complex work it takes to compose those tracks, as well as music from many other genres. I'm just stating that certain types of EDM can be very beautiful and memorable as well. And obviously, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as you stated. Not all EDM is the same mainstream, repetitive pop crap
