Ultra Music Festival Fights Ban With Petition to "Keep UMF in Miami"

Ultra Music Festival has issued a "call to action."

Responding to Mayor Tomás Regalado and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff's proposed ban, the EDM fest has launched a petition to "Keep UMF in Miami."

"In order to stay at Bayfront Park," Ultra writes, "we need your support now." And at the time of this posting, the fest has collected 15,565 supporter signatures of its 50,000 goal.

UPDATE The vote on the Ultra ban has been delayed. Now the Miami City Commission won't discuss the EDM festival's future till April 24.

In its own defense, the festival cites stats and figures, including "millions of attendees from throughout the world" and "an infusion of $223 million into the local economy."

But the less contrived, more convincing argument lies perhaps in UMF's value as a homegrown cultural institution:

Ultra Music Festival has been a launching pad of numerous prominent musicians' careers and uniquely showcases virtually every major genre of electronic music. Some of the world's most cosmic artists today once performed on a small stage at Ultra Music Festival. That tradition is now in peril.

The EDM fest also reaffirms its commitment to the recently announced "Comprehensive Security Review," as well as working "collaboratively with our municipal partners."

Most pointedly, though, Ultra defends festival-goers while calling out Regalado and Sarnoff for their political opportunism:

The vast majority of our attendees are law-abiding music fans that travel to Miami to enjoy our beautiful weather, diverse culture and world-class entertainment. Not unlike other large-scale sporting or entertainment events, Ultra has regrettably had to contend with a few isolated incidents. Certain local politicians have capitalized on these isolated incidents to undeservedly vilify electronic dance music, its industry and its international fan base.

The festival has already announced its 2015 and secured an agreement with the Bayfront Park Management Trust through 2018.

But all that could be moot after tomorrow's Miami City Commission vote on the ban.

I live 1 block from bay front park.  I'll admit Ultra was very organized, I was able to go around with no issues whatsoever, even in car.  There were ways to go in and out downtown, with no major traffic.

When you have over 100K persons around, you will have arrests, drugs and drunk people, but overall I didn't seen any major issues. No murders, mostly young people dancing to EDM and enjoying life.

People need to relax and admit the fact that living in a downtown have it's "trade offs", for me these events is one of the main reasons, I choose to live in a downtown and not in the wetlands.  I couldn't use the bay front park for a few weeks, but that was just a minor adjustment.

If you don't like the "chaos" Ultra causes, then take the weekend off town.

Chill out and enjoy life.

I think it should move to Joe Robbie stadium. I had a gig two years ago down by ultra (a real gig) and it was really a huge mess (in so many ways).. I like lots of people having a great time but when it interferes with everything around it it needs to move. Remember Woodstock had to move 4.8 miles three days before Richie Havens started the music on that friday evening. HA! jk

so basically you all want people to die just because they are enjoying themselves.. safety comes first

ULTRA!, relax, you're not in ANY danger whatsoever of losing Miami as a venue. Matter of fact, Regalado and the other incompetents on the City Commission have already 'tabled" the matter until April 24. In political parlance this means: "Let's make it go away without losing any more face". Hard Truth? You bring MONEY to this community, one injured security guard doesn't matter much in comparison to $$$$$$, you will be welcome again and again and again. I would however recommend that you make at least some cosmetic changes to your security in 2015. Other than that, LONG LIVE ULTRA ! We love you and we specially love your money. Have a nice day! :)

David Lazerson, the issue about what is or isn't done with the money isn't the fault of Ultra or its producers. That's on City of Miami.

Isn't the founder of Ultras dad a bail bondsmen who profits from the arrests? What positives have been done for city of Miami with all the profits.? Have they given back to the community or is it all about the dollars?

Oh, Lord! We'll have to endure the horrible music of the ultra  Do you know the reason why everyone thinks they can DJ? It’s because everyone can. Pat your head and rub your stomach. There, you’re a DJ.”

 take ultra to  tropical park

Move Ultra to a concrete lot. For years I lived in Downtown, and Bayfront park was our park. Unfortunately, it was destroyed for months after Ultra. One year Ultra attempted to lay new grass and mulch to half the park. I applaud the attempt, but huge areas of the park were still visibly destroyed for at least 6 months. It if a beautiful park for locals, but t was not designed for a festival of this magnitude. Go hit up the Dolphins Stadium.

Phillip, for the purposes of this discussion that's exactly right. Hialeah, since you mentioned it, Miami and Miami beach each have their own administrations who decide these matters individually.

I'm a resident in front of Bayfront Park. We have been annoyed by the huge sound. Our babies were afraid of the big sound which continued till midnight. Please imagine babies continued crying while many were dancing and crying. Actually we cannot live inside of the condo in front of the Park during that weekend. The Bayfront Park is now located in front of many residential condos. We don't hope Ultra will be canceled. We also love music. We just hope Ultra will be relocated to an isolated venue near Miami.

Dave, that's like saying Hialeah isn't a part of Miami because its in a "completely different city". Now I'm an Ultra supporter and I hope it stays in the city for years to come but they definitely need to revisit their crowd control measures. This whole smear campaign that the local politicians are taking is disgraceful and a clear pandering for votes in the next elections but Miami locals are too stupid to realize this.

first off, its the actually the same thing because the city gets involved which means city officials and cops and they lock down the whole city...urban weekend has a no bullshit rule and if anythibg f

Just gotta love all the commenters who talk like they're better than everyone and make moronic comparisons. First, Urban Weekend is on Miami Beach not the City of Miami. As such there's a different mayor, board of commissioners and police force. Trying to compare the two is just not smart and makes no sense. Second, if you don't like ultras music, DONT GO! But does that mean the thousands of others who DO like it should suffer? I don't think so. Y'all are not in this city by yourselves, deal.

If the young ravers are doing drugs and breaking the law they should be arrested. If Ultra wants to stay it needs to take greater responsibility for their own event the cops here have enough to do

Stephanie Lynn

youll see them add security ,have drug dogs at the exit..and make tons of money on inprisoning young ravers

miami is not going to kick ultra out..they do this with everything...remember urban week!? they do this so the cops can benefit and got hot the weekend of... all the ultra travelers are about to learn about the rules of miami..come here on vacation ,leave on probabtion..

I for one love ultra. But that festival ruins local businesses for a freaking month. I know because my family has a business on flagler and Biscayne. Downtown is the wrong place for it to be.

I happily spend thousands of dollars every year to come to Miami for this festival I've paid enough to be able to enjoy it for years to come and I'm planning on coming again for the music for south beach and for the greatest setting in the world for this type of event if you remove ultra the city will loose millions in tourist dollars I know they can afford it but I fell in love with miami because of ultra !!!!!

Sayad Khan

The event itself isn't at fault. It's the garbage that attends, and the even bigger garbage outside, that can't afford tickets that try to get in.

How to keep Ultra in Miami? Have armed security personnel taze the shit out of anyone who didn't pay for a ticket, that attempts to hop a fence. Too poor? Too bad!
