Miami's Ten Best Metal Bands of All Time

The state of Florida has always been associated with the vibrant metal scene of the '80s, thanks to recording studios like Morrisound, as well as bands like Death and Morbid Angel, which catapulted this wasteland into international consciousness.

There have been metal outfits formed in every corner of the FLA. Some have gone on to riches and fame. But it is the few bands that have come out of Dade County that are often overlooked.

Though other musical genres in South Florida reflect some of the unavoidable tropicalia of the environment, metal in Miami has always retained a defiant "Anglo-ness" that's refreshing for purists and confusing to Hispanic parents.

Here are Miami's ten best metal bands of all time.

10. Mendacity
This trio's been at it since 1994. And though the group's recorded output has been limited, one of Crossfade's favorite South Florida metal memories was meeting Mendacity's first bass player, Omar Elesgarray, in '97 at Sunset Place, where he gave us a copy of the threesome's disc For Dear Life. The exchange centered on the album's incredibly not-metal cover art -- which, therefore, meant it must have been incredibly metal. And it was! Don't ever be fooled by drawings of people rescuing kittens from trees. Ever.

9. Hibernus Mortis
For real, bro. It would be a terrible world to live in if Miami's so-called "City of Progress" didn't have itself a world-class metal outfit. On paper, Hialeah has the most appeal as a metal muse -- corrupt politicians, Santeria, culture clash, immigrant teen angst -- it's all there. And for close to two decades, Hibernus Mortis has practiced the dark art of deathly, doomy black metal, though the group remains criminally under-recorded. Nevertheless, we're still holding out hope that HM might do something crazy and clever like extreme metal covers of Willy Chirino classics.

No Shitstorm on this list is a travesty.

As with all Top Ten whatever list, not everyone is going to be pleased with the results. Some of the bands people are suggesting in comments below belong in other music categories. Maybe you should read the other posts the author posted on the music scene and you might find your friends bands there

Maybe you should read the other posts that the author posted on the Florida music scene and you might find the bands suggested there. I'm glad the author is writing and bringing exposure to the various music genres and styles of the music scene in South Florida. I'm sure in all lists there will discontent among the audience because they did not find their favorite acts there. Maybe next time, but I'm glad someone took the initiative and their time to think about the many bands that have been playing, and most importantly, continue to play in the Miami and South Florida area.

Most Miami based rock/metal music is deafened by the hip hop scene. There are some south florida spots to see these talented folks, however, not ever publicized. You really have to search in order to find them. For god sakes, we don't even have a rock station. Best rock scene I've ever scene where local artist could shine is in Orlando!

I love how Vandal isn't mentioned and they were once on StarSearch.

Great article. My name is Yasser Morales I played bass in HIbernus Mortis during it's infancy. Lots of great bands on here. I can't believe Demonomacy, Devastator and Thrash or Die were not mentioned.

I think a lot of Great local acts have not even been mentioned

This list is bullshit. Go to an actual metal show and actually talk to people before making a list out of people you Googled.

Weird list. Good to see that some grindcore managed to get on there though haha

Best by what standard? Torche are the biggest, most successful (internationally) out of all the bands that are listed. But I agree with Eduardo Descalzo, Black Tide would be my choice!

Rock in Miami? We don't even have a rock station! This is what's wrong with our city.

You must have not heard of Dissever. They've been around for about 13 years and put out some of the best music in Miami, and I'm not even that big of a metal fan. If you like real metal with great musicianship check them out. :)
