Prank Calling Six Miami Bars and Strip Clubs Where You Should Go Watch the Heat vs. Mavs

Kick ass and get drunk with Udonis and the Heat.
Pour us another IPA. All this ass kickin' is making us thirsty.

By ass kickin', we mean basketball. And by thirsty, we mean drunk. What can we say, Miami loves a team that wins, and right now The Heat are putting butts in the seats at bars and clubs all over Miami-Dade.

We used our Miami New Times Clubs Directory to call up some area watering holes and make up rumors about wild and rowdy Texans running out on their bar tabs all over Dade. We also asked about booze specials and atmosphere.

Then we used that (un)scientific formula to come up with some great places to watch the NBA Finals, eat, drink, and party to live music and DJs after each game.

Here's what we found out.

103.5 The Beat Fans Take Note: There's a New Underground Hip-Hop/R&B Station in Town

Categories: Dialed In, News
donatellaradiowave.jpg

If you were as shocked as we were when 103.5 the Beat suddenly ceased broadcasting, you can now breathe a sigh of relief. Newly launched, Florida-based web broadcaster Da One Radio is now catering to fans of hip-hop and R&B who seek an alternative to what urban radio has become.

Da One is headed by Miami rap music veteran Sam "Smokey Dee" Hayes and popular Miami radio and club DJ Jonathan "Dj Primo" Padilla. Both have played key roles in Miami's commercial and underground rap scene, publishing their own music and artists since 1987.

"Most internet radio stations are really not that much different in programming from commercial radio. We focus on music that would do well on commercial radio but for whatever reason gets ignored," the station programmers said in a recent press release. "We also realize that since we have been deeply involved in Miami's music scene for so many years that we possess original music and contacts that most other radio stations simply won't have access to."

The station's current format is a mix of top 100 urban hits, as well as music from up-and-coming artists.

Former 103.5 The Beat Director, DJ Launches Vanessa James Media

Categories: Dialed In
Vjames.jpg
When the hip-hop and R&B station 103.5 The Beat flipped to 103.5 Super X this past May, many fans were left bewildered and utterly confused. Clear Channel claimed the switch was based on Miami's growing Hispanic market, but few bought the "cultural emergence" argument. Before the flip, South Florida boasted at least six Spanish-language stations on the FM dial (including Clear Channel's own Mega 94.9) in comparison to the hip-hop market's three. With the end of The Beat, now we're down to a measly two.

Caught in the crossfire was the Beat's former music and marketing director and sassy mid-day voice, Vanessa James. Her love of sky-high stilettos and a naturally classy demeanor made her a fan favorite. Once The Beat got the boot, fans feeling the Vanessa void immediately took to her Twitter and Facebook to express their devotion.

Crossfade chatted with Vanessa last night at Grass Restaurant & Lounge about the launch of her own company, Vanessa James Media.

103.5 The Beat is No More; Spanish Station Super X Takes Over as of Noon Today

Categories: Dialed In
logo_top.jpg
If you are a big fan of 103.5 The Beat and their hip-hop and R&B format, you may have noticed something different when you turned on the radio this afternoon. The Beat's yet another in a slew of stations to be taken over by Spanish radio.

Now replaced by "103.5 Super X" as of noon today, they already have a fully functioning site, and promises to play Spanish hits from the '80s, '90s, and today. That sounds an awful lot like 97.3 The Coast's old slogan, doesn't it?

"Based on the South Florida population being over 50 percent Hispanic and growing, adding a second Spanish-language format to the cluster provides us the best opportunity to mirror the South Florida market," Clear Channel Radio/Miami President/Market Manager Brian Olson says. "The addition of 103.5 Super X will strategically complement Mega 94.9. The combination of these two radio stations will provide an unparalleled reach of Hispanic adults 18-54."

Any guesses on which (if any) station will be next to undergo a transformation?
