Flyer of the Week: Torche, Beings, and Heartstrings at Churchill's Tonight

Whenever we see any references to Harry and the Hendersons, we can't help but smile. That fun-loving monster took away our fear of Big Foot and transferred it into a love of hairy-looking, enormous creatures that just want to be a part of the family.

So it should come as no surprise, then, that this flyer makes it as our Flyer of the Week. Granted, Harry seems to have traded in his love of eating pet goldfish for a few tokes. But it seems appropriate, given the abrupt flashes of nostalgia.

Tonight! The Original Wailers Bring Reggae Pioneers to Revolution

Original Wailers.jpg
Wailers fans face a similar dilemma that devotees of Asia, L.A. Guns, the Platters and other groups touring (and squabbling) under the same name face. There are currently two bands touring as the Wailers. The first is the Wailers Band, which was formed by Bob Marley as his backing band after the first group of the same name (which included Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh) disbanded in 1974. After Marley passed in 1981, the band soldiered on under the leadership of guitarist Junior Marvin and bassist Aston "Family Man" Barrett.

Tonight! Jameses at Propaganda, Two Man Gentleman Band at Poor House

Jameses_Propaganda_Flyer.jpg
Two local concerts of note for those making important Friday night decisions include a slate of fabulous local indie rock talent at Propaganda in Lake Worth led by West Palm Beach's the Jameses, and a spiffy pair of guys called Two Man Gentleman Band ("a fusion of vaudeville, early jazz, and old-time country that comes through like a Tin Pan Alley version of the Violent Femmes") at Poor House in Fort Lauderdale. Turns out that Mood Vane scribe Courtney Hambright wrote about both events for us in this week's print edition.

Regarding the Two Man Gentleman Band:
Side by side, Bean and Condon, with their erect posture and wheat-colored skin, create a picture of what an American gentleman might have looked like in the early decades of the 20th Century. What they're actually wearing, Bean admits, are "the cheapest, best-looking suits that we can find from a thrift store at the last town we were in" and explains, "When we play the sort of music we play, it seems like the fashion is from the '20s or '30s."
The Two Man Gentlemen Band, with Viva Le Vox. 10 p.m. Friday, May 14, at the Poor House, 110 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. 954-522-5145; click here.

On the Jameses:
The threesome's first seven-inch, which features the danceable "The Haunted Rider" and the mellow pop song "Rat People," is just in, and Friday will be the first time the Jameses will attempt to play "Rat People" live.
The Jameses, with Nervous Systems, Guy Harvey and Chill Pillars. 8 p.m., Friday, May 14, at Propaganda, 6 S. J St., Lake Worth. Tickets cost $5. 561-547-7273; click here.

Tonight! Roni Size, Morris Day and the Time, Aquabats and Skarhead

Morris Day.jpg
Morris Day will not take no for an answer
These four shows in the Broward-Palm Beach area slated for Friday evening appeal to four drastically different demographics, and none would be characterized as casual.

Erica K. Landau on drum and bass legend Roni Size:
"Mirroring the dark, smoky, sweaty underbelly of ravers' paradise, Size's music contains what sounds like a lot of schizophrenic constructions, rapid-fire pacing, jungle rhythms, and sirens synonymous with DnB.This funk-filled cocktail will be a full-body workout for anyone who isn't shy about hitting the dance floor."

Roni Size, with Juan Basshead, Will Miles, Stereotype, Methodus, Mr. Alvarez, MCs Jumanji, Sopheye, The Nome, and Hydraulix, Merlyn, Supernaut, Mas Inc. 10 p.m. Friday, May 7, Revolution, 200 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $19. 954-727-0950; click here.

Reed Fischer on funk and soul combo Morris Day and the Time:
"Now that Jehovah's Witness Prince has cleaned up his act and his lyrics, the ribald Morris Day and the slimiest slap bass lines around still can drag the night comfortably into the gutter."

Morris Day and the Time, with Michael Sterling and John Saxx. 8 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Club Cinema, 3251 N. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach. Tickets cost $35 to $100. 954-981-3800; click here.

Tonight: The Rocket Summer, New City Lions and Easton at Culture Room

The Rocket Summer has better hair than you do
Best to show up early at Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale tonight to catch two local acts prior to Dallas/Fort Worth product the Rocket Summer's headlining set. Aside from the fact that a gaggle of fans will already be settled in to see and hear Stephen Bryce Avery in all of his dreamy glory performing "Walls" and other emotive pop-punk gems from his recently released Of Men and Angels, two local bands of a similar ilk are worth your time.

We are referring to Fort Lauderdale's New City Lions and West Palm Beach's Easton played at the TopSpot USA showcase we attended and reviewed earlier this month. This show is bound to be a hot topic. Hee hee.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and get some tickets here

Tonight! Rock City Angels, Rebel and DJ Mig, Chicago

RockCityAngels.jpg
Memphis/South Florida glam-punk luminaries the Rock City Angels top the bill for a night of unbridled rock 'n' roll at Monterey Club (2608 S. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale). Show starts at 9:30 p.m.

In short, the band, fronted by Bobby Durango, has a history far too long and twisted to fit here. For those curious about how Johnny Depp used to be in the band, their inter-label competition with Guns 'N Roses, or Durango's assortment of colorful nicknames, spend a couple hours on their Wikipedia. Alternatively, you could just get off your gold-bricking ass and shake a leg. Angry Pudding and the Dirty Boxes are there also.

Plenty to check out in Broward and Palm Beach this weekend, and no matter who you are, you'll find something that will scare you. David Allan Coe, for instance, is playing tonight at Culture Room. He's been known to scare more than a few people in his day. KMFDM are out at Respectable Street, if crazy German electro-bands are your thing. Sevendust is celebrating Revolution Live's fifth anniversary by "rocking" starting at 8, The Spam Allstars are lighting up Propaganda, and Big Mike Griffin is appearing at The Back Room Blues Bar.

Tomorrow night, for those who don't want to sit home and watch the parades of children beg for candy, check out the Diablo Dimes at Monterey Club (Formerly Zoo Bar), The Halloween Drum Circle (Seriously) at Orange Door, REO Speedwagon is playing Cruzan Amphitheater, KMFDM is playing Culture Room, and Celtic Mayhem is playing at Maguires Hill 16.

Sunday, as you're recovering from the monumental sugar buzz, chill out with the sounds of David Foster & Friends at Hard Rock Live or work off the rest of those carbs at the Attack! Attack! Show at Culture Room.

Fresh off their sting opening for Green Day, The Bravery are out on a headlining tour. Tonight, they'll be at Culture Room starting at 8. If you're looking for something a little less radio friendly, check out psychobilly rock gods Viva Le Vox at Respectable Street or Jason and the Punknecks at Propaganda. Finally, the Back Room Blues bar is hosting Mark Hummel's Blues Harmonica Blowout, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Tomorrow night, New Orleans' finest, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band are bringing their 33 years of funking experience to Culture Room, Singer-songwriter pioneer Leonard Cohen is playing BankAtlantic Center, Brad Paisley is at Cruzan, and the Rolling Stones tribute band Roll The Stones takes over CityPlace in West Palm.

Sunday, country singer James Otto plays Round Up, Latin-pop icon Olga Tanon is at Hard Rock Live, and English guitar virtuoso Robin Trower is at Culture Room.

What to Do in Broward and Palm Beach Tonight

Does bluegrass, punk, and southern rock with a gypsy twist sound interesting to you? If you answered no, move on to the next paragraph. If yes, you'll want to head out to South Shores Tavern and Patio Bar tonight to check out Black Finger. Just watch the video below, and if you're not convinced... there's no helping you.

If you'd rather check out something a little more laid back in an island atmosphere, check out Cutback at Mai-Kai. Just remember to order a couple zombies before the show, and everything will meld together into a sort of hazy rum fueled paradise.

Finally, in the battle of the cleverly named bands, The Talent Farm is hosting The Years Gone By, Hands Held High, Racing Kites, and Planet Parker while Murder at First Sight, Calling all Sirens, The Perfect Defect, A Purpose Driven Life, and These Arms of Faith are playing at Solid Sound Studios.
