Since opening in 2005 the David Castillo Gallery has elbowed its way up the Wynwood pecking order with a consistent lineup of provocative, well-executed shows. The young dealer, who’s notched over a decade in the biz, often burns the midnight oil, typically putting in 12 and 14-hour workdays at his shop, letting competitors eat his dust.

His efforts have paid off. “My gallery has been accepted to Art Basel Miami Beach,” Castillo informs. The dealer will debut an installation by Quisqueya Henriquez at the Art Positions (beachside shipping containers) section of the December confab.

“I am thrilled that so much hard work has led to such a special and significant moment for the gallery,” says Castillo whose space New Times recognized as “Best Local Gallery” this May. Castillo has also been invited to the Preview Berlin Fair this October.

The dealer, who reps a tight group of mostly locals, goes on to add that stable members Pepe Mar, Wendy Wischer, Frances Trombly and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova have been invited to participate in various national and international arts residencies this summer. And that New York’s El Museo del Barrio has committed to buying a major work by Glexis Novoa as well.

With the embarrassing lack of local galleries repped at Basel, due to what many bitch to be a snooty selection process, this comes as good news.
