Graffiti artist Aeon and his friends at the Tree Top Collective understand, in a real way, the value of movement as multiple sclerosis began affecting Aeon's ability to walk. The good news is that his buddies, a community of artists, are determined to help him regain his mobility and raise awareness about MS through arts and fun at tonight's Monster Splash Benefit.

An atypical fundraiser, the Monster Splash Benefit will not only feature artwork, booze, and music, but also makeup artists ready with brushes in hand to transform those not already in costume into zombies.  Piercing artist Jane-Marie Ravelo will use bodies as canvases, poking people in unusual places to create intricate, lace-like patterns in their flesh and turn ladies into feathered peacocks.

Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative disorder which causes the body's immune system to attack its own central nervous system. Though there is no cure, there are some treatments. Aeon uses a combination of western medicine and alternative treatments, including meditation, to deal with the symptoms of MS. After being diagnosed five years ago, he gradually moved from walking to using a cane, to a walker, to a wheelchair. Physical therapy has helped him become more mobile in the past, so the proceeds from this fundraiser will help provide him with care that will hopefully get him back on his feet.

Of Aeon, his friends said, "despite every roadblock, he continues to push forward and think positive, which is not something most people can do when faced with such a complicated illness."

Once a graffiti artist, Aeon's condition has affected the way he produces art work, "I have had to completely redefine my style, technique, and approach with each one of my pieces. I used to mainly do murals on walls using spray cans but now I strictly do canvas work. I mostly use paint marker and dot by dot, I create the image and message, which most times has to do with my brain's battle with this chronic, degenerative disease."

The Tree Top Collective was formed by a group of local artists who joined forces to create a
support system for each other outside of the gallery system.  According to the organizers, "Our motto is we put the ART in pARTy. By hosting a party versus the traditional gallery showing, we can sustain the collective without having to take any commission from the artwork itself."

Celebrate Halloween early and with a purpose on tonight at 9 p.m. at AD013 Studio (329 NE 59 Terr., Miami).  It's only $12 at the door, and $10 pre-sale. If you can't make it to the event, you can donate to help the cause at monstersplashbenefit.eventbrite.com. For more information about Multiple Sclerosis visit nationalmssociety.org.
