25. Gean Moreno

Artist and writer Gean Moreno is helping to shape the Miami art scene. Recently, he curated an exhibition at Miami International Art Fair, "Improvising Architectures," which showcased the work of such important local artists at Christy Gast and Adler Guerrier. In his role at MIA, he made it possible for Miami nomadic art project Spring Break to experiment with art and music with their own booth at the fair, bringing a little playtime to what was largely commercial.

Formerly of Locust Projects, Moreno is currently contributing editor of Art Papers magazine. In 2009, he received a Knight Arts Challenge grant, which enabled him to pursue his goal of creating Miami-based art books. [Name] Publications offers a platform for book-based projects, featuring editions by Nicolas Lobo, Daniel Newman, Beatriz Monteavaro, and the experimental design studio El Ultimo Grito.

His art has shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, and around the world at Kunsthaus Palais Thurn and Taxis in Bregenz, Institute of Visual Arts Milwaukee, Haifa Museum, Arndt & Partner Zurich, and Invisible-Exports. He's also published in e-flux journal, Monu magazine, Flash Art, Art Nexus, and ArtUS

Moreno took the time to answer some of Cultist's 100 Creatives questions.

1. List five things that inspire you (at the moment).

-Small, weird, homemade publications, tapes, graphics etc.
-The people who make small, weird, homemade publications, tapes, graphics etc.
--Artists/writers who are like the people who make small, weird, homemade publications, tapes, graphics etc. (Miroslav Tichy, Jiri Kovanda, Xul Solar, Sam Gordon, Harmony Korine, Kenneth Anger, Francis Ponge, Jean Genet, Gertrude Stein, etc.)
-Amorphous creatures
-Pierre Guyotat

2. What was your last big project?

Research on generic objects (in collaboration with Ernesto Oroza)

3. What's your next big project?

 A novel?

4. Why do you do what you do?

I'm increasingly unsure of what exactly it is that I'm "doing."

5. What's something you want Miami to know about you? What's something you don't want Miami to know about you?

That I would give it all up in a second for a modest farmhouse in the Andes.
