43. Nick Duckart

When Nick Duckart first told his folks that he wanted to be an actor, they were not pleased. In fact, his father refused to come to his shows. At the time, Duckart was an honor student in the top 5% of his class at Hialeah High, and his parents had had more academic hopes for their boy's future. Finally, though, Duckart Sr. begrudgingly agreed to see his son in the starring role of his high school's production of Godspell.

Somewhere around the scene where the crucified and bedraggled Jesus begs divine forgiveness for his persecutors, Duckart's dad had become a convert. "He came to me after the show, just weeping and weeping, and he said, 'I get it,'" Duckart recalls. "Now, every clipping or write up, he takes it to work and shows it off. That's his thing."

Duckart's theater credits include Farragut North at GableStage at the Biltmore, The Whipping Man at the Caldwell Theatre, and Dr. Radio at Florida Stage. He's also appeared on USA's popular Burn Notice and performed voiceover and commercial work throughout Miami. He currently splits his time between New York and Miami, but says he will always consider himself "un pibe de Hialeah."

2. What was your last big project?

What's a "big project?" In my opinion, it's a project that had a positive influence on my life, and every show I have ever done in SoFla has. I've had the honor of working at great theatres such as GableStage, Actors' Playhouse, Florida Stage, Mosaic, and the Caldwell, among others. I've met great people and have created some amazing productions that I'm very proud of. My last project, however, was a Broadway-bound musical named Cuba Libre written by Desmond Child (a Songwriters Hall of Fame member) at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California. I got the chance to play a young Fidel Castro, and will be doing so for the next year or so.

3. What's your next big project?

I will be continuing work with Cuba Libre. Next year,I will also be doing A View from the Bridge at Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples, as well as Masked at GableStage at the Biltmore. I'm also an ensemble member of the kick-ass, brand new, theatre company, Zoetic Stage. Looking to keep that rockin', and continue to do some work with them. But my biggest project is always to be the best son, brother, and uncle I can be. I have four nephews and a niece who think I'm awesome. I can't let them down.

4. Why do you do what you do?

Because I can't see myself doing anything else. I absolutely love telling stories, instilling emotion into an audience. There's just something about the artistic collaboration that makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. I love being one of the cool theatre kids.

5. What's something you want Miami to know about you? What's something you don't want Miami to know about you?

I used to have dreams of being in the NBA as a kid. I used to have a bad-ass jump-shot. I actually tried out for the Heat this year, but they went with some dude named LeBron, instead.

[I don't want Miami to know that] I own every episode of I Love Lucy on DVD .,, for real.
